Job Description:

Raritan Valley Community College's Science & Engineering department is currently accepting applications for a Part-Time Instructor to teach Environmental Science and Geology courses for the upcoming semester and beyond.

The following courses may be included:

Introduction to Geology: This course is a study of the earth's structure, composition and history; processes which shape the earth's surface, such as glaciation, crustal movements and tectonics, erosion, and sedimentation; fossil study; classification and characterization of rocks; applied geology of mineral, energy, water and ocean resources; and of natural hazards. Laboratory activities include rock classification, air photo and topographic map interpretation, practical problems in environmental geology, and trips to field locations in New Jersey.

Plants, Humans and the Environment: This course explores the relationship between plants, people and the environment. Lectures cover the cultural, economic and political significance of plants to human societies, and the effects of human activities on plants and the environment. Labs provide a first-hand introduction to the current and historical human uses of plants (e.g., food, fuel, shelter, fiber, dyes) in New Jersey and around the world. Students will go on field trips to local natural areas, farms and winery.

Introduction to Environmental Studies: This course is a basic introduction to environmental studies. Students will learn to apply various concepts in the biological, physical, social sciences and humanities in order to understand the causes and consequences of environmental problems facing the world today, and what can be done to address them. Students will also be encouraged to explore how these concepts and issues relate to their own lives, from both global and local perspectives.

Energy, The Environment and Climate Change: Provides a broad introduction to energy issues as they relate to generation options, utilization and environmental impacts. Topics include overviews of traditional carbon-based energy sources, nuclear options and sustainable energy technologies such as solar, wind, biofuels and hydrogen. The crucial link between energy and climate change will be examined. The environmental consequences of energy choices on local and global scales will be discussed and integrated throughout the course. Topics will be evaluated by applying basic scientific principles to real world problems. Existing and potential energy policy options at an international, national, state and local level will also be explored.

RVCC is nationally recognized for its educational excellence, innovative programming, extensive service to the community, and environmental leadership.

RVCC is a great place for students to start their college education and then transfer to a four-year college or university. Our students have transferred to the top colleges and universities in New Jersey and across the nation, including Columbia, Cornell, Stanford, the University of Pennsylvania, and New York University.

For students looking to train for a career, RVCC is leading the way thanks to a $4.6 million workforce training grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. In partnership with local industry, RVCC is reinventing workforce and technical training by identifying the long-term workforce needs of the region and developing programs that provide students with all the skills and hands-on experience they need to succeed.

We also recognize that there is more to a successful college experience than just classroom learning. Our co-curricular offerings—including clubs, student government, athletic programs, and leadership development opportunities—are thriving. RVCC’s chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society and its Enactus team have earned regional and national honors. And the College’s Service Learning Program has been included on the President’s Community Service Honor Roll for eight consecutive years.
