Position and Qualifications
Programs offered by the Chemistry Department prepare students to meet the challenges of a complex global society. Facilitated by modern methods of analysis and by close working relationships with faculty, students receive expert theoretical and practical instruction in all fundamental areas of modern chemistry, including analytical chemistry, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry. Three program options are available: chemistry (B.A. or B.S.), chemistry with a biochemistry concentration (B.A. or B.S.), and chemistry with a business concentration (B.A. only).
The ideal candidate will hold a Ph.D. degree in chemistry. ABD doctoral candidates will be given full consideration but are expected to have a degree in hand before July 1, 2025. Experience teaching organic chemistry and introductory chemistry at the undergraduate level is strongly preferred. Candidates will also demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching excellence, innovation, and mentorship in a liberal arts context.
A broadly trained individual with expertise in biochemistry (and at least one other sub-discipline such as organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, or physical chemistry) is sought. The applicant should possess a strong interest in teaching excellence and innovation within a liberal arts institution focused on educating women.
The position carries a teaching load equivalent to six courses per year. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to develop special topics courses and will contribute courses to the core curriculum (Hollins’ general education program). Additional duties include maintaining an active research agenda and service to the department and university such as student mentorship and advising, supervision of undergraduate capstones and internships, and faculty governance.
Candidates are desired who will advance Hollins’ commitment to diversity, equity, justice, and inclusive excellence; who have demonstrated success working with and mentoring students who are first-generation, limited-income, and from historically underrepresented groups in higher education; and who have an active record of ongoing scholarly activity in the form of publications and presentations.
