Job Summary

The dean of Milner Library, who reports directly to the provost and vice president for academic affairs, has oversight of all areas of Milner Library's operations, including personnel, budget, policy, copyright education and compliance, constituent relations, and development. The dean leads Milner's involvement in the University's strategic initiatives and is charged with strategic planning for Milner Library that is consistent with the University's mission, vision, values, and strategic directions. The dean provides leadership that supports the University's core value equity, diversity, access, and belonging by fostering comprehensive programming and planning. Illinois State is an institution that deeply values shared governance; therefore, its dean of university libraries must be able to work with all constituents to develop, articulate, and enact a clear vision for the 21st century library. Because Milner's mission is deeply woven into the fabric of Illinois State University, the dean is a visible and vital representative of the College and serves on numerous other internal and external committees at both the local and state level. Faculty and staff at Milner have a long history of partnering with campus faculty in achieving student success and offering instruction to complement the curriculum at every level. The dean is expected to foster those collaborations.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate

$170,000 - $200,000 commensurate with experience

Required Qualifications

1. Master's degree from an ALA accredited program or international equivalent;


2. A record of academic and professional achievement warranting tenure at the rank of full Professor at Illinois State University;

3. Record of successful administrative leadership in dynamic academic organizations as dean, associate dean, director or comparable leadership role;

4. Demonstrated commitment to equity and support of the critical needs of a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.

5. Experience developing and managing complex budgets;

6. A record of accomplishment supporting high-quality academic library services and collections, scholarly and creative productivity, public engagement, and outreach activities.

10. Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment;

Preferred Qualifications

1. Earned doctorate in a discipline related to the University’s curricula

2. Working knowledge of the pedagogical, andragogical, economic, and political relationships among academic units within the university;

3. Demonstrated ability to work collegially with other deans, administrators, and diverse stakeholders in developing goals and programs and a commitment to shared governance;

4. Experience in the development and implementation of a strategic plan;

5. Experience with fundraising, donor stewardship, and/or securing and managing external funding;

6. Demonstrated understanding of state and federal library policy and legislation and copyright and other intellectual property law;

7. Experience with leadership and/or oversight of facilities resources;

8. Demonstrated energy, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to communicate effectively;

9. Ongoing participation in national/international library professional organizations;

10. Demonstrated understanding of libraries in K-12 laboratory schools and a willingness to advise and support laboratory school library staff and operations.

Must be able to complete the following with or without a reasonable accommodation:
