Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:The Department of Biology at UNC-Chapel Hill is dedicated to the discovery and dissemination of new and existing knowledge in the broad discipline of Biology by maintaining a high-quality faculty who integrate cutting-edge research and student-focused teaching.
We are one of the largest academic departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. We have over 2,800 majors and we enroll over 5,000 undergraduate students in our classes each year. Our average total annual expenditures exceed $24 million, with nearly half of that coming from grant sponsored research. Our large research base spans many areas of biology and supports several outstanding graduate programs. We consist of 50 tenure-track faculty, 10 teaching faculty, 8 research faculty, and numerous active adjunct and emeritus faculty who are engaged in basic and interdisciplinary research and teaching, both within the department and between other departments and schools at UNC.
The Department of Biology at UNC-Chapel Hill will hire a visiting Teaching Associate Professor to teach BIOL 104 Biodiversity during the first session of Summer School 2025. This course provides an introduction to the biological diversity we see on Earth today and encompasses a variety of genetic, species, and ecosystem level variation. This course will focus on the biological principles that push biologists to understand what produces and sustains the biodiversity of life on Earth. This class will address key questions about how we identify and measure biological diversity, how it changes over time, and why biological diversity matters as our planet continues to change. Classes are held daily during the summer. Pedagogical materials (syllabi, learning goals, slide presentations, guided reading questions, quizzes and exams) are in place; course development requirements are minimal.
Responsibilities for the class:
- Prepare a syllabus, outlining topics and reading assignments in the textbooks for each class period
- Prepare and present lectures for each class
- Prepare exams and provide guidance to TAs about grading
- Post class materials (e.g. Powerpoint presentations, synopsis of main points, assignments) on Canvas
- Hold office hours each week
- Respond promptly to email messages from students
PhD in a related subject or the appropriate graduate level training
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:Relevant college teaching experience; experience with in-person and remote teaching technologies.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers. Carolina is about 30 miles from the state capital, Raleigh, and 20 minutes from Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Technological facilities: Students find multiple uses for Carolina's state-of-the-art technological resources. The MetaLab oversees the development of SunSITE, one of the world's busiest digital library and electronic publishing projects.
Students may open e-mail accounts, and many use campus computer resources to construct personal Web pages. Students in residence halls have hardwired network connections to the Internet and cable television in their rooms. At the ATN Training center, students may take classes on software packages and utilities. Computer labs are available for student use all over campus.
Carolina Computing Initiative: Beginning with the freshman class of 2000, undergraduates must purchase laptop computers. The University has arranged for IBM to offer computers at excellent prices.
