General Description:

The Professor of Political Science at Oklahoma City Community College has the primary responsibility for supporting student learning by providing quality instruction. Quality instruction includes clear course objectives, prepared and relevant class activities, effective and understandable presentations of learning materials, fair and understandable grading practices, timely responses to students and the creation of a positive classroom atmosphere. Secondary responsibilities include supporting the integrity of the curricula, participating in the assessment of student learning outcomes for the program and/or department, developing a plan for professional development, encouraging student success and promoting the mission of the Division of Social Sciences and Oklahoma City Community College.

Minimum Education/Experience:

Master’s degree in Political Science, to include 18 graduate level credit hours in the primary course of study.

Prior teaching experience

Ability to communicate and articulate concepts in an organized manner both verbally and in writing.

Ability to read and understand content in order to assist students when they are having difficulty interpreting concepts.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions:

1. GENERAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

2. PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.

Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.

Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which one must convey detailed or important spoken information or instructions to others.

Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and make fine discrimination in sound.

Repetitive Motions: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

3. VISUAL ACUITY:
Requires close visual acuity to perform activities such as but not limited to: preparing and analyzing data, figures and reports; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; expansive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts and/or operation of machines; using measurement devices; and/or assembly of parts at distances close to the eyes.

4. WORKING CONDITIONS
Typical office environment; this position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience teaching in multiple modalities (in-person, online, hybrid).

Work Hours:

This is a full-time position. Teaching schedules can include on campus on days, nights and/or week-ends; online; hybrid; or concurrent sections offered at remote locations. Required institutional activities (other than attendance at commencement) usually occur in the classic eight-to-five Monday through Friday work week.

Job Duties (Duties Assignment Statement):

A faculty member is primarily responsible for supporting student learning by providing quality instruction in courses that the faculty member and the Department Chair agree will be taught.

Quality instruction includes clear course objectives, prepared and relevant class activities, effective and understandable presentations of learning materials, fair and understandable grading practices, timely responses to students, a positive atmosphere in the classroom and continual assessment and improvement of departmental programs.

Essential Functions:

In addition to the primary responsibility for supporting student learning, a faculty member is expected to:

Be available to students by maintaining posted office hours.


Manage program and course curricula by helping select textbooks, evaluating learning materials, writing course syllabi, and maintaining master courses.

Maintain a flexible schedule to meet program and department needs.

Contribute to developing, and implementing, and evaluating approved academic programs and developing new academic programs to meet community needs.

Fulfill course, program, and department goals and objectives.

Respond in a timely fashion to information requests from program, division, and college administrators.

Attend department, division and college meetings.

Acquire new knowledge and skills as appropriate for the academic discipline.

Maintain license or professional certification specific to program requirements.

Develop and implement a professional development plan.

Participate in on-campus staff development opportunities.

Participate in mutually agreed upon committees.

Satisfy objectives for mutually agreed upon assignments.

Participate in faculty-related activities that attract and retain students.

Contribute to a safe educational & working environment.

Support the writing of program reports.

Support the College’s vision, mission, goals, and priorities.

The Professor of Political Science will be required to teach multiple sections of POLSC 1113 American Federal Government. The Professor of Political Science will be expected to teach 2000 level courses.

As needed, the Professor of Political Science may be required to teach:
POLSC 1000/2000 Special Topics in Political Science
POLSC 2103 Introduction to Public Administration
POLSC 2113 Introduction to State and Local Government
POLSC 2223 Introduction to Law
POLSC 2303 Introduction to International Relations
POLSC 2603 Introduction to Comparative Politics
POLSC 2623 Introduction to Political Theory
Other similar courses as needed.

Job Duties (Safety / Policy & Procedures):

Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices for the purpose of providing injury and illness prevention for self and others.

Complete quarterly health and safety training pursuant to OCCC’s established safety and health procedures and practices.

Participate in all applicable OCCC emergency, evacuation, shelter in place drills, and be prepared to take action and assist others in taking appropriate action should a health or safety emergency occur.
