Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:Building Services provide full maintenance and repair services for all UNC facilities and ensure the proper operation of those facilities in support of the UNC mission of teaching, research and public service. Building Services supports more than 400 campus buildings with approximately 18 million gross square feet of space. The teams that provide quality maintenance, repair and construction services that support the teaching, research, and public service mission of the University include Campus Maintenance, EMCS, Facilities Operations Support, Housing Support, HVAC Systems, and Life Safety Services. Campus Maintenance operates, maintains and improves the physical environment of the University through a complete line of shop services that include carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, insulation, preventive maintenance and special laboratory equipment repair.
Position Summary:A SIGN-ON BONUS OF $4,081 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF HIRE:
$2,040.50 WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE & $2,040.50 12 MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE.
Performs as a team leader by supporting the mission of the Campus Maintenance Carpentry Shop in the daily functions and responsibilities of the section. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
1. Serves as the lead technical resource for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs required in building carpentry, i.e., flooring, windows, doors, interior trim, cabinetry, solid surfaces, framing, siding, acoustical ceilings, computer-access flooring, painting, metal framing, wall partitions, exterior columns, exposed beams, mantels, staircases, metal studs, lathes, and drywall.
a. Leads team to promptly respond with the proper tools and equipment to address emergencies, i.e., flooding, that could require water remediation. Addresses water removal and humidity control to prevent further damage to the building and its furnishings and takes proper remediation action to abate damaged materials including deteriorating sheet rock, rotting of wood, mold growth, rusting of metals, and de-lamination of various materials. Responds appropriately in terms of safety precautions when dealing with clean water, greywater, and blackwater. Ensures that wastewater, which includes greywater or sullage, is recycled on-site for other uses such as toilet flushing. Blackwater, which is designated as sewage or contains human waste, must be dealt with appropriately, taking different safety precautions.
b. Prior to accomplishing any work, recognizes potential asbestos or lead containing materials in buildings and takes proper action and makes appropriate notification.
2. Provides technical support to all junior personnel assigned to the Campus Maintenance Carpentry Shop. Performs and/or assists in training and orientation of new personnel assigned to the shop.
3. Ensures assigned area workload schedules are accomplished as issued. Notifies the Carpentry Shop Supervisor immediately of any desired and/or necessary deviations, delays, or early completions that are needed in the assigned schedule.
4. Ensures a proper shop stock of miscellaneous materials (i.e., glues, solvents, ceiling and floor tiles, cove base etc.) that are needed in support of various campus buildings are readily available for repairs. Ensures and maintains an adequate inventory of equipment/parts received for shop stock are kept organized and ready for emergency and/or routine repairs. Ensures the cleanliness and organization of the shop and assigned service vehicle.
5. Performs design and engineering, reviews specifications and plans for new buildings, building systems, upgrades, and renovations. Submits review comments to the Carpentry Shop Supervisor. Consults with equipment/material manufacturers and/or designers for recommended installation methods, material changes, and/or additional equipment/tool requirements to obtain optimal results for applications when required.
6. Fills in for the Carpentry Shop supervisor when the supervisor is unavailable.
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:Journey level carpentry experience. Ability to read and interpret construction blueprints and detailed job descriptions, create a materials take-off list and complete purchase requisitions for needed materials, complete purchase requisitions for other purchases (i.e., tools and tool accessories as necessary), and ability to apply skills in planning, problem-solving, attention to detail, teamwork, communication, and adherence to safety. Skills and knowledge necessary to use and operate the associated powered or hand tools of the trade properly and safely.
Valid North Carolina driver’s license or ability to obtain one prior to start date.
Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of essential (mandatory) University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions, including but not limited to a public health emergency, may require the University to close.
Ability to be on call and perform assigned emergency call-back duty. Willingness to respond at other times to any campus emergency when contacted.
A baseline blood draw, a physical and inoculations are required to provide Bio-Safety Level (BSL) 2+ and 3 labs support. Entry into hot labs with an Environment, Health & Safety department escort is also required, which necessitates wearing respiratory protection, as well as annual medical certification, fit testing, and training. Rotational emergency call-back duty in direct support of BSL 2+/3 labs is also required.
Progressive experience as a journey level carpenter in an institutional or commercial environment.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements :Ability to work on hands and knees for extended periods of time; move objects weighing at least 50 lbs. or more, with or without a reasonable accommodation; climb and work from ladders, boom lifts and scaffolding up to 60 ft.; and ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) for the specific job, including but not limited to safety harnesses, fall protection, respirators, face masks or face shields, and protective gloves and safety shoes.

A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time (more than 20 hours a week) employee are eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working more than 20 hours and less than 40 hours per week).
