Job Title:IMR Member of Technical Staff, Research Scientist

Department:ERIK | Institute for Material Research

The Research Scientist for the Ohio State Institute for Materials and Manufacturing Research (IMR) serves as an IMR Member of Technical Staff and will be the Institute’s lead epitaxial growth research scientist. With a focus on compound semiconductor materials and devices, the epitaxial growth scientist will carry out, guide and enable collaborative research and training in semiconductor epitaxy for priority areas of next generation of semiconductor devices based on wide and ultrawide bandgap semiconductors, and other semiconductor materials by collaborating with device designers, processing scientists and device test engineers from Ohio State and external partners, on joint projects.

The successful candidate will

  • Lead and support independent and collaborative research programs at Ohio State focused on epitaxial growth of wide and ultrawide bandgap compound semiconductors using metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) and related vapor phase epitaxy methods for device technologies such as power electronics and high frequency RF electronics, and will support other forms of epitaxy used for technologies in areas such as optoelectronics.

  • Support project design, management, and collaboration with external partners and sponsors.

  • Initiate and participate in collaborative research with Ohio State researchers focused on device fabrication, testing and analysis to enable a vertically-integrated research protocol.

  • Coordinate team reviews, support report activities, mentor graduate students, contribute to the publication of research papers, prepare proposals for research funding.

  • Enable collaboration across the range of semiconductor growth systems throughout the IMR, including MOCVD, hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE).

The Research Scientist position will be part of a world-class team that is driving forward the university’s research program in semiconductor materials and devices and fills a key need that complements other researchers who are focused on device fabrication, characterization, testing and analysis. The Research Scientist will develop and lead a comprehensive, vital program encompassing state of the art epitaxial growth of compound semiconductor materials, heterostructures and nanostructures. The epitaxial growth scientist will work closely with researchers across centers, departments and colleges, extending into device design and fabrication. The combination of research expertise, project management skills, and collaboration capabilities within this position makes this role integral to ensure both Ohio State’s cutting-edge research in semiconductors and enabling high impact partnerships with external entities.

It is also expected that the Research Scientist will, over time, secure external funding toward support of their salary and research program.

Education, Qualification, Experience

Required: Ph.D. in electrical engineering, materials science or related field required; hands-on experience performing MOCVD epitaxial growth of III-V and/or wide bandgap compound semiconductors, with verified history of using epitaxial techniques to demonstrate high-performance optical and/or electronic devices; significant experience in designing and optimizing growth recipes for complex device structures, including generating and managing growth databases; evidence of deep technical knowledge in several of the following areas: epitaxial thin film growth, materials characterization techniques (optical/electrical/surface/structural) electronic device design and engineering related to power and/or RF devices, semiconductor and heterostructure physics; evidence of high quality research with a record of archival research publications, presentations at professional conferences; experience in generating technical reports; U.S. citizen or green card holder.

Desired: Research experience beyond Ph.D.; experience with trouble-shooting MOCVD systems; experience with HVPE growth; experience with MBE growth; experience with semiconductor cleanroom tools and semiconductor device processing and characterization; MOCVD growth of one or more of GaN, AlGaN, Ga2O3; experience with managing technical projects and supervising technical staff.

A resume or CV are required to be submitted to be considered for this position. A cover letter is strongly desired.

Additional Information:

The title of Research Scientist and/or Principal Investigator is dependent on Office of Research approval.
