The Laboratory Research Operations Analyst provides proficient technical and operational support for the NSF-NeXUS Facility, a newly developed, user- based research lab facility. The Facility supports users conducting research in materials and chemical analysis using the laser system and multiple laboratory techniques. The Facility operates a high-power laser system to support user research. The Facility operates as a clean room and has specialized HVAC in place to ensure the laboratory environment is maintained to equipment specifications.
The Laboratory Research Operations Analyst utilizes in-depth knowledge and specialized expertise to support operations, assembly, maintenance, and troubleshooting of all lab equipment. The Laboratory Research Operations Analyst takes primary responsibility for elements of lab infrastructure, especially vacuum systems and gas/liquid distribution lines. The Laboratory Research Operations Analyst will supervise the acquisition, use, storage, and inventory of experimental test equipment and fixtures. The Laboratory Research Operations Analyst will develop and document standard operating procedures to support facility maintenance. The Laboratory Research Operations Analyst monitors the laboratory environmental conditions and serves as the primary interface with Ohio State Facilities staff, contractors and vendors to coordinate routine service and maintenance to ensure the laboratory meets all environmental specifications. The Laboratory Research Operations Analyst will work with Facility staff to develop the skills needed to independently operate laboratory systems and subsystems and collect data. The Laboratory Research Operations Analyst will consult with internal and external Facility users to help formulate analytical strategies for using the lab’s equipment to meet their experimental needs. The Laboratory Research Operations Analyst may lead/mentor doctoral students and postdocs and supervise hourly master’s or undergraduate students.
This job will entail a significant amount of time in a cleanroom environment. This job will involve work with a high-power laser system, and the Analyst will follow laboratory safety procedures to protect themselves and other Facility users. The Analyst will apply industry knowledge and a thorough understanding of concepts, principles, and technical capabilities to be successful in the role. This position is designated as a standby position in accordance with the Emergency Preparedness and University State of Emergency Policy 6.17. Requires successful completion of a background check.
Required experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- Two years of equipment maintenance/repair experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- Experience in the repair and maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment required.
- Experience with vacuum equipment and gas distribution required.
- Willingness to work in a team setting and learn about new equipment and techniques required.
Desired experience:
- Advanced degree in a relevant area (mechanical, electrical, or similar)
- 4-8 years of equipment maintenance/repair experience or equivalent combination of education and experience desired. Experience in troubleshooting and repair of simple electronics desired.
- Some machine shop experience desired.
- Experience supporting researchers in a laboratory environment desired.
