Organizational Unit Overview:
The Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Program (ICSP) at the Brody School of Medicine (BSOM) provides learners with simulation-based education across the East Carolina University Health Sciences Campus and ECU Health Medical Center. The program collaborates closely with ECU Health Medical Center in offering educational activities to Graduate Medical Education, EastCare, and other hospital staff. The mission of the Clinical Simulation Program is to promote excellence in clinical care, promote patient and learner safety, and improve multidisciplinary team performance using simulation modalities. The ICSP is a fully accredited program by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.

A 24-room, 10,000 sq. ft. Clinical Simulation Center is located adjacent to the hospital on the first floor of the Brody School of Medicine building. The ICSP also has a mobile Healthcare Simulation Unit, a 44-foot specialized vehicle that provides simulation education throughout the region, and an MV-22 Osprey Military Transport Simulator. A new 30,000 sq ft Simulation Center will assume construction in spring 2025 as part of the new Medical Education Building (opening Fall 2027).

Job Duties:
Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University is currently seeking to hire a full-time at will Associate Dean of Clinical Simulation to lead its Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Program.

The Associate Dean is primarily responsible for providing leadership and oversight to all activities of the Office of Clinical Simulation at the Brody School of Medicine. This position's primary goal is to provide leadership in all administrative aspects of simulation and instruction in the Simulation Program. The Associate Dean will work closely with BSOM and ECU Health Leadership and collaboratively across campus to accomplish the mission and vision of the Simulation Program. This position will require in-person administration and instruction to support the BSOM Simulation Program.

Duties include:
Teaching/Instruction (20%)
  • Create, lead, and participate in simulation educational activities for medical students, graduate medical education, and interprofessional teams.
  • Identify and recruit interdisciplinary simulation faculty. Orient faculty instructors to simulation methodology, oversee the faculty development curriculum, and annually assess simulation educators.
  • Support and integrate interprofessional simulation based educational modalities into the medical student curriculum by facilitating the use of simulation-based modalities and techniques, recruiting and training simulation faculty and course directors.
  • Collaborate with faculty from other disciplines to develop course content. Participate in the development and validation of clinical scenarios.
  • Participate in regional education programs using the Healthcare Simulation Unit.
  • Work closely with the Administrative Director, Assistant Dean, and Medical Director to provide oversight of the Program.
  • Faculty for the Central Venous Catheterization Course for residents, fellows and advanced practice practitioners and Moderate Sedation Airway Management for residents and medical staff. Works with ECU Health to ensure quality initiatives related to these programs are met.
  • Instructor for M2 Doctoring physical diagnosis rotation (PDR)
  • Instructor for M2 Clinical Applications course for second year medical students.
  • Course Director for Emergency Medicine Simulation Fellowship
  • Course Director for M3 and M4 medical student simulation elective, emergency medicine, critical care, and internal medicine electives
    Administration (30%)
  • Provides oversight (or delegates to the appropriately qualified individual) and medical direction for all ICSP operations and simulations.
  • Participate in development of processes, procedures, and evaluations for accreditation requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Graduate Medical Education to provide opportunities for residents and fellows to participate in simulation-based activities that meet ACGME requirements.
  • Actively participate in the BSOM Clinical Simulation Program Advisory Group, Brody Council, BSOM Academic Affairs Division Leaders Group, ECU Health Patient Safety-Performance Improvement Committee, and other committees as assigned.
  • Provide insight into the clinical practices of ECU Health and integrate those practices into ICSP programs.
  • Directly supervise and annually evaluate the Administrative Director, Medical Director, and Assistant Dean. Assist the Administrative Director in evaluation and development of ICSP staff.Strategic Planning (30%)
  • Develop an interprofessional simulation program that includes BSOM, ECU Allied Health Science programs, and ECU Health. Secure sustainable funding from all stakeholders.
  • In partnership with the Administrative Director, develop plans and proposals for expansion and growth of the Clinical Simulation program, including new space and programs to meet the needs and demand of a variety of stakeholders. Generate a strategic plan for the next 3-5 years based on annual and semi-annual goals.
  • Support the simulation program accreditation through the Society for Simulation in Healthcare ensuring instructors are trained in simulation instructional methods, advocating for the program, and creating and documenting educational sessions based on current clinical best practices.
  • Develop a robust mobile program by developing interdisciplinary collaborations and secure sustainable funding.
    Leadership (10%)
  • Adheres to the ECU and SSH code of ethics and demonstrates high integrity and professionalism. Acts as a role model for medical students, residents, fellows, and staff.
  • Demonstrates ability to work in a dynamic environment and adaptability to change.
  • Develops in-depth understanding and profound interest in simulation education and research.
  • Participates in regional, national, and international simulation societies to gain and share new insight and knowledge related to the simulation field.
  • Promotes simulation best practices and initiatives established by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH). Actively participate in the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, including attendance and presentations at the annual International Meeting for Simulation in Healthcare and participation on committees and interest groups.
    Research/Creative Activity (10%)
  • Foster and participate in simulation-based research to increase knowledge and understanding and to improve training and evaluation, design of systems, and patient care.
  • Report the results of simulation-based research at meetings and submit for publication.
    Contingent upon availability of funds.

    Minimum Education/Experience:
    -MD/DO from an appropriately accredited institution or completed foreign medical education accepted and recognized for ECFMG Certification.



    License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:
    Physicians must be able to obtain a license to practice medicine in North Carolina, be granted medical staff privileges at ECU Health Medical Center, be approved to practice medicine through ECU Health Physicians, and receive medical liability insurance coverage through ECU Physicians and ECU Health carrier.

    Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
    · Clinical background in emergency medicine, critical care, emergency medicine/internal medicine· Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) status· Three or more years of simulation experience at the undergraduate medical education level, including standardized patients, high-fidelity manikins, and partial task trainers.· Completion of a Simulation Fellowship
    - Five years experience in a healthcare setting.
    · Detail-oriented with excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, interprofessional, and organizational skills. Ability to work independently, problem-solve, analyze complex information, improve processes, maintain confidentiality, and meet deadlines. Proven capacity to work well with faculty, staff, and students.
