Job Description:
Amherst College invites applications for the Casual Driver position. The Casual Driver is a part-time, casual position with no benefits, starting at $40.00/hour. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.
The driver is responsible for transporting the President to and from meetings and events, train stations, airports, etc., in a safe and timely manner. Number of hours and schedule will vary month to month and include nights and weekends, as well as occasional day trips. Will require driving in cities like Boston, New York, and other locations.
Summary of Responsibilities:
- Transport president and other passengers to and from destinations
- Make pickups and arrive at destinations on schedule
- Research and plan for traffic, construction and weather delays
- Use navigation applications to determine the best route
- Adhere to all traffic laws and respect the rights of other drivers
- Ensure passengers, trip details, and conversations remain confidential
- Ensure that the vehicle is fueled prior to and during trips
- Assist with heavy luggage, packages and objects, as well as loading and unloading from the vehicle
- Work closely with the Office Manager regarding travel plans
- Work closely with the House Manager regarding car maintenance issues
Qualifications:
Required
- Valid driver's license and successful credentialing is required in order to operate college vehicles
- Five years of professional driving experience to perform the job safely (prior experience as a personal driver is advantageous)
- Clean driving record
- Interact with clients professionally at all times
- Minimum visual acuity of 20/50 (or corrected to 20/50)
- Excellent navigation skills and proficiency in using navigation applications to find destination and pickup locations
- Time management and organizational skills to stay on schedule
- Listen to traffic and weather reports to stay up-to-date on road conditions
- Adjust the route to avoid heavy traffic, road construction, etc., as needed
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills in interaction with passengers
- Ability to remain calm in stressful driving situations
- Neatly presented and professional
- Successful completion of a CORI check
- Successful completion of pre-employment physical and lift test
- Commitment to working with a diverse and inclusive community
Preferred
- Prior experience as a personal driver
- High School Diploma or equivalent
