Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Mason and Roofing Shops Supervisor and or the Manager of the Paint, Mason, Sign and Roofing Shops inspect, maintain, repair, design, modify and or alter roofing of Campus infrastructure including all buildings, common areas and related structure, etc. Identify source of roof leaks and damage and make temporary and permanent repairs. Conduct water tests to verify integrity of completed repairs; perform on-going inspections; adhere to maintenance schedules; setup job by collecting and preparing all supplies and equipment. Inspect all complete projects and submit all labor and material charges appropriately. Apprise supervisor of job progress and to resolve any problem(s) related to the job. Provide direction to semi-skilled and unskilled workers. Established safety procedures at all times.

Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of the various roof types, materials, and methods of installations, including built-up roofing systems. (Required)
  • Skill in: installing composition shingle, tile and water-proofing membranes; assessing condition of various types of roof systems to determine repairs and/or maintenance required; modifying and/or adapting designs, procedures or methods to make necessary alterations and modifications. (Required)
  • Ability to: assess condition of all roof sheet metal such as pipe flashings, parapet wall flashings, scuppers, gravel guards and parapet copings; safely and skillfully operate the various standard tools and equipment of the roofing trade e.g. propane torch and fire extinguisher. (Required)
  • Ability to: troubleshoot roof installations to determine source of roof water leakage; read, interpret and understand technical language in specifications, schematics, and blueprints; work at heights and walk on sloped roofs. (Required)
  • Skill in: estimating material and labor requirements to accomplish tasks; adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing 4-digit numbers and fractions in order to calculate layouts, offsets, and provide accurate cost calculations to Supervisor (Required)
  • Ability to: establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with peers, subordinates, supervisors, administrators, customers, visitors and outside agencies; work independently and follow through on assignments. (Required)
  • Skill in: writing English phrases using correct grammar and spelling to complete reports that are accurate and easy to comprehend; using verbal communication skills to obtain or convey clear, concise and grammatically correct information (Required)
  • Working knowledge of: UBC, OSHA and ADA requirements as it relates to the function, and the ability to recognize discrepancies of ADA and Fire/Life/Safety codes; standard safe work practices. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of the various roof types, materials, and methods of installations, including built-up roofing systems. (Required)
  • Skill in installing composition shingle, tile and water-proofing membranes. (Required)

  • Other Type of Degree Successful completion of an apprenticeship program in roofing and/or 5+ years of commercial roofing experience (Required)

  • Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
  • Pre-Placement Physical: Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory physical examination.
  • Driving Record: The position is subject to the California DMV "Pull Notice System" and continued employment is contingent upon proof of a satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to stand, crawl, walk and stoop; push and pull and lift object up to 50 lbs. Ability to push and pull lift and lower object weighing up to 90 lbs. with assistance. (Required)
  • Ability to work outdoors in wet or humid weather, and in fluctuating and/or extreme temperatures or under adverse situations and conditions, e.g. dirty, noisy, etc. (Required)
  • Ability to drive a University truck or other light vehicle in the course of duties and possess a valid California driver's license. (Required)
