Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Produce several stories per month for web distribution, highlighting faculty publications, news and events
  • Occasionally attend and cover college events
  • Interview faculty, staff and students
  • Assist with other communication- and marketing-related projects
  • Create relevant and engaging content based on topics as assigned and pitched
  • Work with the OMC team to generate ideas for new content topics
  • Meet regular story submission deadlines
  • Other related duties on an as-needed basis, and per interests/experience

Position Summary:

The student writer will work in the Office of Marketing and Communications (OMC) within the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES), assisting in the dissemination of news and information about the college to the campus and news media. This position offers the opportunity to develop internal announcements within CAES and UGA Cooperative Extension, review and creatively adapt research publications to produce clear, engaging, and accessible content for a general audience, and write compelling stories as part of a burning questions and consumer-focused series. Writing will be shared across multiple channels, including the CAES Newswire, Cultivate, Almanac and other CAES and UGA communication platforms. Writing includes media releases, web content, research stories, faculty and student profiles, and feature stories.

The ideal candidate is available to work 15 hours per week. The hours are flexible and will be structured around class schedules and related deadlines with the possibility of hybrid (partially remote) work.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position:

  • Strong writing and research skills
  • Competent in Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop or Canva and willing to learn and use project management and CAES publishing systems
  • Knowledge of correct spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • Knowledge of AP writing style

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies :

  • Previous experience reporting for a newspaper, broadcast, radio, online or other media outlet is a plus
  • Students with experience studying or working in agricultural communication, communications, journalism, media studies, marketing, public relations or English are preferred
