Job Description Summary

The Communications Officer operates the WFU Police Department's communications systems. The Communications Officer’s shifts include days, nights, weekends and holidays and are subject to hours beyond or outside normal scheduled shifts, short notice and/or emergency call-ins.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Operates the department’s radio communications system and dispatches all calls for assistance to officers properly and professionally.

  • Responds to emergency situations which may involve contacting the Winston-Salem Police Department, Fire Department, Forsyth County Emergency Medical Services, Rescue Squads, on-campus emergency teams, and other departments and agencies.

  • Must have excellent hearing in both ears, clear speech, effective verbal skills, and be able to type quickly and accurately on the computer keyboard.

  • Accurately records all events and activities during each shift in the CAD (Computer Automated Dispatch) system.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D with three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Related experience includes customer service, administrative work, and/or demonstrated experience working on a team.

  • Must be a United States citizen.

  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal, communication, and time management skills.

  • Proficiency with the operation of multiple line telephones and multi-channel radio equipment.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suites, the internet, and other relevant software.

  • Must pass a criminal background investigation, psychological screening, drug screening and a medical evaluation by a licensed physician.

  • Ability to meet the requirements of the University’s automobile insurance.

  • Must be able to work nights, weekends, holidays, and special events as needed.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Three years of related experience in police/emergency communications and/or customer service-related environments.

  • DCIN/NCIC certification.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to sit or stand at a desk/console for long periods of time.

  • Must be able to meet the North Carolina Standards and Training Commission minimum standards for sight and hearing.

Environmental Conditions:

  • Subject to inside environmental conditions. Must be able to work alone in the communications center for long periods of time.

  • If working during special events, the employee may be required to work either inside or outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, dry/arid conditions and stand, walk or sit for long periods of time.
