Job Location:Raleigh, NC
Department :Fitts Dept of Industrial & Systems Engineering
About the Department:The Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) at NC State strives to improve society through research and education across a broad spectrum of methods and application areas. The ISE community includes more than 25 faculty, 10 core staff, 350 undergraduate students, and 250 graduate students with approximately 75 Ph.D. students. The ISE department leads three centers and multiple interdisciplinary graduate degrees, where faculty members work together in a collaborative and collegial environment (ranked highly by US News).
NC State is growing engineering (expected to be 40% over five years) in part to meet growing industry demand for graduates and the growing demand associated with Applied AI. The university is based in Raleigh, NC, which was recently named Best Places to Live by US News and World Report, with proximity to urban areas, beaches, mountains, great restaurants, cultural activities, and more. Our location also represents the eastern point of the Research Triangle and places us close to three major universities, a large number of world-class companies, and several leading research institutes. Our faculty are Fellows of IISE, INFORMS, SME, and additional societies.
In ISE, innovative research is conducted within and across areas, along with interdisciplinary collaborations across the university and beyond. In addition to degrees in ISE, the department leads a Master’s in Engineering Management degree, collaborates on graduate degrees in Operations Research, and supports the Integrated Manufacturing Systems Engineering Master’s degree. The department houses two funded centers that are public-private partnerships, including the Ergonomics Center of North Carolina, which is the only center of its kind at a U.S. public research institution, and the Center for Additive Manufacturing and Logistics, which is one of the most advanced manufacturing and 3D printing laboratories in the country. The newly established Bezos Center for Alternative Proteins is also led by an ISE faculty member.
The ISE department is supported by world-class laboratory facilities for computing, manufacturing, and human factors and ergonomics research, enhanced by the new Fitts-Woolard Hall, located on NC State’s Centennial Campus near the award-winning Hunt Library and numerous industry and governmental facilities. Our faculty members are internationally renowned in their fields, and they have extensive collaborations with other departments, universities, medical schools, and other external partners. NC State students ‘think and do’ with active learning on real-life problems across the entire ISE discipline, and our students become leaders in academia, industry, and government. NC State engineering is expanding, with up to 40% growth in faculty, staff, undergraduate, and graduate students expected over the coming years.
Faculty members in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) at NC State invite applications for multiple tenure-track or tenured faculty positions. Preference will be given to junior-level appointments (Assistant or Associate Professor), though candidates with significant experience may be considered for Full Professor rank. These positions may be affiliated with the College of Engineering’s Applied AI initiative and its ongoing growth, as well as with interdisciplinary centers (e.g., CAMAL, Bezos Center) or programs (e.g., Operations Research).
There is potential for hiring in other areas such as supply chain engineering, human systems, sustainability, and emerging fields within ISE, with rank determined by the candidate’s experience and qualifications.

Organization
NC State: Think and Do
NC State was founded with a purpose: to create economic, societal and intellectual prosperity for the people of North Carolina and the country. We began as a land-grant institution teaching the agricultural and mechanical arts. Today, we're a pre-eminent research enterprise with 12 colleges excelling in all major academic fields.
Our 34,000 high-performing students take what they learn in the classroom and apply it in the real world by conducting research, working in internships and co-ops, and performing acts of world-changing service. That experiential education ensures that they leave here ready to lead the workforce. NC State's 13:1 student-faculty ratio is one of the reasons why we're the best college for your money in North Carolina (Money) and the No. 5 best value among public universities nationally (U.S. News & World Report).
Overcoming Challenges, Improving Lives
NC State is one of only two universities in the nation leading two National Science Foundation Engineering Research Centers — one developing wearable, self-powered health monitors, and the other researching smart-grid technology. We’re also leading interdisciplinary efforts to curb nuclear proliferation, help farmers confront climate change and build a new American manufacturing sector.
Our research doesn't just get published in a journal or sit on a shelf; it makes an impact. NC State is No. 6 nationwide in commercialization agreements based on university research, and we're No. 2 among universities without a medical school. Our Cooperative Extension Service provides research-based information to citizens in all 100 North Carolina counties. In addition, our industrial extension unit — Industry Expansion Solutions — has created an economic benefit for the state's manufacturers averaging $149 million per year since 2005.
Bright Minds Creating a Bold Future
NC State’s 9,000 faculty and staff are world leaders in their fields, bridging the divides between academic disciplines and training high-caliber students to meet tomorrow’s challenges. NC State students won two Goldwater scholarships, five Fulbright scholarships, one Churchill scholarship and a record-breaking 25 National Science Foundation graduate research fellowships in the 2016-2017 academic year. In addition, 25 faculty are members of the National Academies.
Our Centennial Campus, an award-winning public-private research campus, is home to more than 70 partner organizations working alongside more than 70 NC State research and academic units. Centennial is also the location of the innovative Hunt Library, which Time magazine has dubbed “the library of the future.”
