The Department of Teaching and Learning within the College of Education and Human Development at Temple University invites applications to fill an open rank faculty position in either the Elementary or Middle/Secondary Teacher Education program beginning in Fall 2025. Our Elementary Education and Middle/Secondary programs prepare undergraduate and graduate students for teacher certification and to work in schools serving youth from diverse backgrounds.
The successful candidate will be expected to establish a robust program of research at Temple University that contributes significantly to the national dialogue on urban teacher education and literacy, with broad implications for innovative work in Grades 3-12. The ideal candidate will have a strong, productive research agenda, with a proven track record of publications and grants, or the potential to secure external funding for research appropriate to their career level. The candidate will engage in scholarly research that advances knowledge in urban teacher education and literacy, focusing on issues such as educational equity, community engagement, and culturally relevant and sustaining teaching practices.
In addition to conducting research, the successful candidate will contribute to the preparation of future educators in urban school settings by designing and teaching new courses, as well as redesigning existing courses to support aspiring teachers in meeting the pressing needs of students in Philadelphia, the surrounding regions, and other urban school districts. Their work should have the potential to influence practices in teacher education and literacy/ELA/English, and to transform the educational experience of students in urban contexts.
Furthermore, the candidate will participate in program, department, and college meetings and initiatives, providing leadership and support as appropriate. There will also be opportunities to mentor doctoral students within the department’s PhD program in Education.
Required Qualifications:
- Doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in Teacher Education, Urban Education, Literacy or English Education, or a related field. ABD candidates with a clear timeline for completion will be considered.
- Demonstrated expertise in teacher education, urban education, literacy or English Education, with experience working with diverse populations in grades 3 and above.
- A strong record or potential for scholarly research and publication in teacher education, particularly in urban contexts.
Rank is open, with potential appointments at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor, depending on qualifications. For early-career applicants (Assistant Professor), preferred candidates are those currently holding the rank of Assistant Professor or those completing or recently completing a postdoctoral position. For mid-career and senior applicants (Associate or Full Professor), preferred candidates will have a robust publication record and an active, externally funded research portfolio, with a research record that aligns with a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
- A commitment to culturally relevant, sustaining, and anti-racist teaching practices.
- Willingness to build partnerships with urban schools and communities.
- Knowledge and skills in the principles of Belonging, Equity, and Inclusion, with the ability to collaborate and engage in interdisciplinary research.
