Under general supervision, the position provides tailored retention and student success services for Men of Color, with a special emphasis on Black/African Americans and Latine students. The position will be responsible for strategic initiatives focused on academic success, well-being, inclusion, celebration, and graduation of Black Men and Men of Color students, including the coordination of activities of the Pasadena City College Men of Color Action Network (MOCAN) and African American Male Education Network (A2MEND) programs. MOCAN and A2MEND primarily serve the needs of Black Men and Men of Color students under the Division of Equity, Diversity & Justice. The position assists the supervising manager and lead program counselors, staff, and other faculty by supporting services for Men of Color students through case management towards graduation/transfer, organizing services, developing workshops, trainings, and events, and coordinating centralized assessment of student success initiatives geared towards closing equity gaps and addressing campus climate.



EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Supports student outreach, recruitment, career, retention, completion, and transfer efforts, in collaboration with other campus partners, with a special focus on Black/African Americans and Latine students. (E, 25%)
  • Develops and implements events and services for MOCAN and A2MEND to support the educational experience of Men of Color students in collaboration with lead program counselors, staff and other faculty, including overseeing logistics and scheduling. (E, 20%)
  • Monitors responses and supports for Men of Color identified students Early Alerts submitted by faculty and staff through the establishment of goals centered in equity to promote success. (E, 20%)
  • Collaborates with academic and career counselors, success coaches, retention specialists instructional/non-instructional faculty, staff, instructional aids, tutors, and managers to identify potential barriers to Men of Color student persistence and develops culturally responsive strategies to address these barriers. (E, 20%)
  • Connects Men of Color students to appropriate programs and services both on campus and off-campus to best assist them with issues affecting their retention, success, basic needs, safety, and wellbeing. (E, 15%)
  • Monitors equity-focused Men of Color student involvement in on-campus support resources, including academic counseling, development of student educational plans, support services related to financial aid, scholarships, internships, transfer, including completion of transfer admission guarantees, and other campus services through a case management model.
  • Prepares and provides educational workshops and trainings for students, staff, and faculty, on topics related to inclusion, student experience, strengths of Men of Color students, best practices for supporting Black and Latine Men student success, and services available for students across campus which may include work after hours and on weekends.
  • Leads, mentors, and evaluates performance for student interns/workers and volunteers from a strengths-based perspective, related to their program or projects, particularly those focused on Men of Color student programs and services.
  • Utilizes data to assess and develop tailored programs and services for Men of Color students, focusing on retention, academic success, and basic needs; prepares reports for the supervising manager to evaluate program effectiveness, including program review, annual planning, and development of student learning outcomes.
  • In collaboration with counselors, staff, and faculty identifies goals of MOCAN and A2MEND and resources necessary to assist the supervising manager to meet the changing needs of Men of Color students.
  • Monitors budgets to assist the supervising manager in budget administration, including requisitions, documentation, and databases.
  • Collaborates with District staff to identify, hire, train, schedule and lead hourly staff.
  • Assist in the development of culturally appropriate marketing and publicity materials such as flyers, emails, newsletters, posters, presentations, brochures, videos, websites, and social media platforms.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.




  • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
    Required:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in education, counseling, psychology, sociology, or closely related field
  • Two years of experience working with the Men of Color community or diversity affairs, or two years of experience working in academic advising, retention, education, student services, non-profit, community organizing, mental health or related field.
    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in education, counseling, psychology, sociology, or closely related field.
  • Four years of experience working in the field of student services and success, education, non-profit, community organizing, mental health, or related field.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge and understanding of Men of Color student experiences and broader diversity issues in higher education, with knowledge of emerging challenges, trends, and concerns, and the ability to address them through retention strategies and programs.
  • Expertise in student retention, recruitment, and academic advising, particularly for underserved communities.
  • Commitment to social change including working to end all forms of oppression: racism, heterosexism, trans oppression, ableism, sexism, classism, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience working with communities who have been traditionally underserved by higher education and experience in the pedagogy reflecting intersections of race, culture, class, ethnic, and queer communities.
  • Proficient in crisis management, conflict resolution, and responding to emergent student needs.
  • Experience in creating, implementing, facilitating, and promoting programs, workshops, and events for diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to hire, train, and lead student workers and hourly staff, ensuring effective execution of duties and promoting student success.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, including tact, diplomacy, and the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Strong skills in using standard office applications (Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, Word, Excel), web design, social media, and tools for data analysis and reporting.
  • Capable of prioritizing and managing multiple projects, adhering to safety and confidentiality protocols, and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to produce detailed reports, analyze data, and present findings to improve retention and program success.
  • Maintain and foster positive relationships with students, staff, faculty, and external partners.
  • Provide excellent customer service, timely communication, and follow-up with student referrals and concerns.
  • Skilled in preparing manuals, proposals, schedules, and budgets, and effectively using office software to create training materials and manage operations.
  • Excellent initiative, organization, attention to detail, resourcefulness and problem-solving.
