The Marine Microbial Ecology Lab at VIMS aims to advance the understanding of marine ecosystems through precise isotopic analysis, enabling groundbreaking research on microbial processes that sustain ocean health and biodiversity. Position Summary:

The Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (IRMS) Specialist is primarily responsible for the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of institutional isotope ratio mass spectrometers (IRMS). This position will work with researchers across the institute to support grant-funded research projects that require the use of these instruments. The position provides an opportunity to expand your skill set in the specifics of IRMS machines.

Specific duties of the position include but are not limited to,

  • Instrument calibration, maintenance, operation, and troubleshooting.
  • Preparation of samples for analysis and analysis of samples using various techniques.
  • Contributing to the experimental design, data collection, and analysis of a variety of grant-funded research projects.
  • Assisting with the preparation of reports and manuscripts for publication.
  • Ordering and maintaining an inventory of lab supplies and consumables.
  • Maintaining detailed instrument logs and records.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree OR an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Working knowledge (typically 1-3 years of hands-on experience) using IRMS instruments.
  • Willingness to learn different applications of the IRMS and gain specialized knowledge in reconfiguring the associated modules.
  • Experience with sample preparation and analysis for various analytical chemistry techniques.
  • Experience with data processing and interpretation.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities with the ability to research solutions and self-direct.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Planning and time-management skills with the motivation and interest in expanding skillset related to the position.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety procedures and protocols.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters or PhD in Chemistry, Geochemistry, Geology, or a related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience with processing and interpreting data generated by IRMS.
  • Experience training students and/or other researchers on the use of IRMS instruments.
  • Experience supporting the analytical chemistry needs for a variety of research projects.

Advertised Pay Range:

Up TO $60,000

Advertised Pay Range Statement:
