Job Title:Senior Director, Research Compliance, Research Integrity Officer

Department:ERIK | Administration

In an era of strict regulation of research activities, advancing university research has become more complex. It is critical that research conducted at the university is compliant with the requirements of federal and state governments and that we adhere to comprehensive university policies and procedures. At the same time, these policies and procedures must ensure enough flexibility to exclude unnecessary bureaucracy for researchers.

The Office of Research Compliance (ORC) oversees research compliance across the university and partners with investigators, department chairs, and deans to ensure that faculty and staff conduct their research with integrity and respect and minimize compliance risks. ORC also coordinates with other units to maintain federal compliance requirements within the Enterprise for Research, Innovation, and Knowledge (ERIK), including the Offices of Responsible Research Practices, Sponsored Programs, Secure Research, and Human, Animal and Laboratory Investigations, and with the Office of University Compliance and Integrity (OUCI).

This position is for a Senior Director for the Office of Research Compliance and will report to the Associate Vice President of Research Integrity and Investigations (AVP RI&I). The Senior Director of Research Compliance is responsible for developing, implementing and leading programs and policies across the university to ensure the university's compliance with federal, state and/or private sponsor requirements as well as university policies to support and promote ethical research practices. The Senior Director leads and manages a highly qualified team with significant institutional span responsible for conflict of interest, controlled substances in research, responsible conduct of research, and research misconduct investigations for the entire university. The Senior Director must be highly organized and work to establish reporting metrics of case and compliance matters. The Senior Director oversees educational programming related to research misconduct, RCR, conflict of interest, and controlled substances. The Senior Director responds to OUCI requests for risk assessments and metrics in research compliance matters. Strategic planning for growth and risk identification is managed by the Senior Director. The Senior Director makes decisions on planning and implementation of new research integrity initiatives for the university.

The Senior Director serves as the university's Senior Research Integrity Officer (RIO) and informs the AVP RI&I of allegations and the progress of any cases. This individual will be responsible for responding to all allegations received and processing them through the research misconduct policy and tracking the issues in Navex. The Senior Director maintains the university policy on research misconduct and ensures the policy stays up to date with federal changes. The Senior Director represents Ohio State to the national community of research integrity officers, including participation and/or leadership of national committees and organizations as assigned. The Senior Director will be required to engage with federal sponsors including direct communication with federal partners on case statuses.

The individual in this role must have strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage and help build consensus among stakeholders in highly complex research compliance areas and communicate compliance concerns to other ERIK offices and OUCI.

Required Qualifications: Master's Degree. A minimum of 12 years relevant experience. Expertise in academic research, research administration and/or research compliance. Ability to develop strong relationships and work with senior-level administration and faculty and federal agency officials. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, detail oriented. Exceptional ability for managing staff to support career growth.

Desired Qualifications: Ph.D. and experience in biomedical, physical or behavioral science. Minimum of 15 years of relevant work experience. Knowledge of USDA, NIH, DEA, DOE, DOD and ORI policies and regulations, state law and university policies and guidelines pertaining to research misconduct, responsible conduct of research, controlled substances, and conflict of interest. Experience working with sponsored research & compliance issues in higher education. Strong problem-solving and leadership skills.
