The Ohio State University College of Medicine (COM) seeks an exceptional leader to serve as the next Vice Dean of Education. The Vice Dean of Education holds a pivotal role in the Dean’s leadership team and is a key partner in developing and executing the COM’s education strategy. Reporting to the Dean of the COM, the Vice Dean drives excellence and innovation through program development, fostering a vibrant teaching community and ensuring an effective learning environment. The Vice Dean partners with leadership to develop, implement and ensure accreditation of the academic programs across the college. The Vice Dean builds and manages the education infrastructure needed to support a broad and growing educational portfolio, including pathway programs, undergraduate, graduate, professional, graduate medical, and continuing medical education. They also partner with stakeholders to build strategic partnerships and foster a culture of teaching and learning. The Vice Dean will pursue a variety of efforts to elevate the national reputation of educational programs within the COM and maintain strong connections with counterparts in the other colleges within the University. This position is at least a 75% appointment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Advise on the strategic direction of the education mission and support education infrastructure of the COM.
- Oversee and achieve excellence in pathway programs – undergraduate, graduate, professional, graduate medical, and continuing medical education – as measured by external benchmarks.
- Lead and maintain accreditations for necessary programs, including the MD program's LCME accreditation.
- Ensure the quality of education and standards are met, including degree outcomes.
- Oversee, develop, and monitor curriculum, materials, and student evaluation processes.
- Develop and implement student-related policies and procedures.
- Work with student leadership to develop and implement student-led initiatives, meet and collaborate with COM Student Council leadership regularly.
- Provide strategic partnership and leadership in matters relating to education, grant funding, and scholarship.
- Build programs to support enhanced innovation and collaboration within educational programming.
- Provide inspirational leadership that motivates faculty and creates a positive and effective learning environment within an accountable culture.
- Ensure fiscal responsibility including the creation of and adherence to a balanced annual budget.
- Create a focused effort dedicated to philanthropy with a commitment to direct these resources toward the COM and OSUWMC strategic plans and to department initiatives that support this plan.
- Maintain a commitment to the success and growth of the COM and OSUWMC through advocacy of the organization in national and international societies, forums and committees.
- Partner with the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences on academic program development and implementation, student life and program accreditation.
- Oversee the Clinical Skills Education and Assessment Center, the Office of Curriculum and Scholarship, the Health Science Library, the Office of Global Health, the Dean’s Scholars Program.
- Supervise, in partnership with the dean, COM Associate Deans, as well as the Medical Director, and COM faculty in appointed education roles.
- Represent the COM on academic committees across the University.
- Collaborate with the graduate school on interdisciplinary graduate programs (IGP).
- Represent the COM on academic committees across the University.
Required Qualifications:
- MD or equivalent degree;
- Board certification/eligible;
- Licensed/license-eligible in the state of Ohio;
- Outstanding leadership record commensurate with a senior Associate Professor or full Professor, as measured by publications, curriculum development and national reputation;
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills;
- Experience in medical education, in areas such as admissions, curriculum development and delivery, learning environment and student life;
- Proven leadership skills building effective teams and collaborating with a wide variety of stakeholders;
- Experience collaborating with students and student organizations/groups;
- Demonstrated commitment to and excellence in teaching and learning;
- Experience in mentoring faculty in teaching and curriculum development.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in graduate and undergraduate education;
- Ability to collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders, including students, inspire and motivate others, successfully lead others through positive change, and act as a consensus builder;
- Experience working in interdisciplinary settings;
- Prior leadership role in health sciences education or related;
- Proven ability to develop and execute strategic plans, ensuring long-term success and adaptability;
- Experience in working with philanthropy and donors;
- Demonstrated ability to advocate for improvements to curricula and educational processes while skillfully navigating obstacles to achieve desired outcomes.
