Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

WUNC Radio provides quality news, information and entertainment programming to a broad listening audience that includes North Carolina, the United States and the world. WUNC serves North Carolinians from Greensboro to the Outer Banks through a network of seven stations.

Position Summary:

North Carolina Public Radio-WUNC, the public radio station licensed to the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill, is hiring several interns for our Youth Reporting Institute. These are paid positions with flexible hours, up to 16 hours per week, with a pay rate of $18/hour. The positions will be in-person with some possibilities for hybrid/remote work. A computer will be provided. The positions are expected to start in January and run through May with possibilities to extend.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience related to the area of assignment in a broadcast television, radio and emerging media environment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Excellent verbal & written communication skills; proficiency with standard spelling, grammar, punctuation, and style.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Understanding of journalistic practices, ethics and public radio core values.

Special Instructions :

There are three open positions housed within different departments, and each department will supervise their intern(s). Here are the different positions for which you can apply:

Daily News Internship:
This intern will work within WUNC’s News department, primarily with the daily news team. They will be responsible for writing and producing audio and digital stories for our daily broadcast newscasts as well as online platforms. They will have opportunities to complete feature stories, as time allows. They may also perform administrative tasks or duties as assigned. Students are asked to dedicate one or two days a week during regular business hours preferred (Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-6 p.m.).

Digital Internship:
This intern will work within WUNC’s Digital Content Department, primarily with the digital news team. In this position, the intern will get the opportunity to learn the WUNC content managing system (Grove), and learn the workflow of a daily newsroom. The intern will play a backup role to digital producers, and be responsible for some web copy editing and posting to the WUNC website and social media channels.

In addition to sharing these day-to-day responsibilities, the intern will learn how to develop and report a digital-first story. This will include not only written copy, but also the responsibility to find or take photos and other visual elements for that story. It will also require the intern to produce some social media content for the WUNC Instagram and YouTube accounts. These can be vertical ‘TikTok style’ videos or, a collection of photos for an Instagram carousel-type post.

Due South Production Internship:
This intern will work within WUNC’s Programming department with the team behind Due South a daily talk show that’s a source for news, information and perspectives from across North Carolina and the South. This is an opportunity to learn audio editing, broadcast production, how to pitch stories, write scripts, and craft conversations around important topics and interesting guests. Interns will get hands-on experience producing pre-recorded segments, live broadcasts, and assisting with other elements of a daily show, including content for digital and social media.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers. Carolina is about 30 miles from the state capital, Raleigh, and 20 minutes from Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Sports and athletic programs: UNC is an NCAA Division I school with 28 varsity teams. Technological facilities: Students find multiple uses for Carolina's state-of-the-art technological resources. They can access Carolina's computer services through Academic Technology and Networks, which manages academic computing, e-mail, microcomputing labs, interactive media presentation, video and classroom support, and a help desk. The MetaLab oversees the development of SunSITE, one of the world's busiest digital library and electronic publishing projects.

Students may open e-mail accounts, and many use campus computer resources to construct personal Web pages. Students in residence halls have hardwired network connections to the Internet and cable television in their rooms. At the ATN Training center, students may take classes on software packages and utilities. Computer labs are available for student use all over campus.

Carolina Computing Initiative: Beginning with the freshman class of 2000, undergraduates must purchase laptop computers. The University has arranged for IBM to offer computers at excellent prices.
