Position Overview

The Assistant Debate Coach (ADC) assists the Debate Coach in all aspects of coaching and managing the debate team including debate practice, preparation for competition, hosting debate competitions at Lee College, and traveling to away competitions. The debate program at Lee College is a nationally competitive debate program that competes primarily in the IPDA (Public Debate) style and has maintained a small presence in Individual Events. The squad consists of fifteen (15) or more students who travel to ten (10) to twelve (12) tournaments annually, including national championship tournaments. The ADC reports to the Head Debate Coach/Director of Forensics.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Help prepare students for debate competitions by providing coaching and giving feedback on debate performances.
  • Travel with the Lee College Debate Team to tournaments across the nation, which may include driving the college van or a rental vehicle.
  • Help plan and manage debate camps and practices.
  • Help plan and manage on-campus debate competitions.
  • Help plan and manage service projects for members of the debate team.
  • Participate in community outreach projects including judging at oratory contests and mentoring public speaking organizations.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance at debate practice and in competitions.
  • Evaluate the student learning experience using procedures provided by the Head Debate Coach.
  • Assist the Head Coach with recruitment efforts on campus, at local high schools and in the local community.
  • Assist the Head Coach with scholarship evaluations.
  • Participate in professional development as directed by the Head Debate Coach.

  • Minimum Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Associate's degree in Communication Studies, Speech Communication, Political Science, History, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Four (4) years of experience coaching and/or competing in intercollegiate forensics/debate.
  • A valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree in Communication Studies, Speech Communication, Political Science, History, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft.
  • Experience with coaching and/or competing in a variety of styles including IPDA, NPDA, CEDA/NDT, or Individual Events.
