Job Details
Lake Forest College, located just north of Chicago, invites applications for the position of Science Shop Machinist.
A scientific instrument maker is sought to run the machine shop for the science department. The necessary skills include operation and maintenance of manual lathes, mill, and other standard shop equipment; resolving complex design and fabrication problems such as planning work from verbal or minimal written instructions to manufacture mechanical devices; determining tolerances and fits on mechanical designs; diagnosing, troubleshooting, repairing, and rebuilding mechanical devices; welding and soldering; and basic woodworking. Some skills in basic electronics are also desirable.
This person will also provide technical support to science department programs and experimental research projects, including the construction and manufacture of special purpose instruments and delicate laboratory equipment.
Job Responsibilities:
- Maintain the Science Machine Shop and Woodshop
- Maintain and, as necessary, repair the shop equipment
- Keep the shops clean and orderly
- Maintain appropriate supplies and types of cutting tools: taps, drill bits, etc.
- Keep reasonable amounts of raw stock and supplies (nuts, bolts, etc.) on hand
- Construct special purpose instruments and laboratory equipment to support teaching and research
- Assist faculty and students in design work
- Determining tolerances and fits on mechanical designs
- Resolving design and fabrication problems such as planning work from verbal or minimal written instructions to manufacture mechanical devices
- Help maintain electrical and mechanical equipment used for teaching and research in the Johnson Science building
- In general, be available until at least 3 pm on workdays
- Other duties as assigned by the supervisor, the Chair of the Physics Department
