Boston University (BU) is an international, comprehensive, private research university, committed to educating students to be reflective, resourceful individuals ready to live, adapt, and lead in an interconnected world. In our undergraduate Schools and Colleges, students gain depth of knowledge in their chosen major. Through the BU Hub, our university-wide general education curriculum, students follow their interests as they gain breadth of knowledge and essential skills. Inside and outside the classroom, our students engage in a vast array of activities such as cutting-edge research, artistic production, innovation and entrepreneurship, experiential learning, and global exploration.

Boston University is launching a significant expansion of undergraduate advising by increasing the number of professional academic advisors, each of whom will work with a caseload of approximately 200 students in one of our undergraduate schools or colleges. Our advisors engage in holistic academic advising that supports exploration and helps students realize academic, career and life goals. Colleges and Schools with open academic advisor positions include the College of Arts & Sciences, the College of Engineering, the School of Hospitality Administration, Questrom School of Business, and Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.

Our university community welcomes differences, encourages open-minded exploration, and upholds freedom of expression. We seek candidates who support our commitment to ensuring BU is an inclusive, equitable, and diverse place where everyone can thrive.

Responsibilities:

Academic advisors provide holistic academic advising, share information about degree requirements, support student services in their school or college, and contribute to student success efforts. In general, advisors are responsible for assisting students with course selection, monitoring student performance, connecting them with appropriate academic support or enrichment opportunities, and maintaining advising records in accordance with University and legal regulations. Advisors also provide guidance on academic policies and procedures and connect students with relevant campus resources.

Essential Function 1 (80%): Holistic Academic Advising Each academic advisor works with a caseload of approximately 200 undergraduate students, helping their advisees craft educational plans based on their aspirations, interests, and values. To support students in achieving their goals, advisors encourage academic exploration and engagement in experiential learning opportunities such as internships, research, and study abroad. Advisors regularly provide guidance on degree requirements and help students understand the purpose of those requirements. Advisors also explain University and School/College academic policies and procedures. Advisors perform outreach and track student engagement to assure that students utilize academic advising and other relevant resources on campus. As part of their role, academic advisors will need to develop expertise using MyBU, the Universitys Student Information System.

Essential Function 2 (10%): Student Services Academic advisors are involved in various student services activities. Depending on their school/college and the time of year, advisors may assist with incoming student orientation, support student groups or organizations, plan community events, visit with prospective students (and their families), or staff commencement activities. Advisors may also lead first-year success seminars that introduce students to campus resources, build community, and promote habits of success.

Essential Function 3 (5%): University and School/College Service Academic advisors may serve the larger community through various University and School/College committees. They may participate in advisor hiring, provide support to the advising community, or engage in other service activities. Advisors will engage in regular professional development and extended training opportunities.

Essential Function 4 (5%): Other Duties Other Duties related to student success, as assigned.

Organization

The Difference Is Our DNA

What compelled the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to award Boston University a grant to fight newborn mortality in Zambia? Why did Martin Luther King, Jr. adopt BU as a place where he could hone his message of justice and equality? And what is the catalyst that prompts 32,557 students from 135 countries to call BU their home every semester? It’s in our DNA: an inherent desire in each of our students, faculty, and staff to vigorously and dauntlessly pursue knowledge—and embrace the unlimited possibilities that come with it.

A Community Unlike Any Other

As you can see below, it takes people, ideas, and a little luck (Boston, you’re our town) to make BU what it is today: one of the most dynamic universities in the world.

Celebrated thinkers: On any given day, students will find themselves mesmerized by Nobel Prize winners, a poet laureate, and the first biomedical engineer ever to receive a MacArthur Foundation “Genius Award,” among others.

Extraordinary teaching: When a classroom starts to percolate with new ideas, it’s because our faculty of scholars and accomplished practitioners know how to ignite students’ imaginations. That’s why we reward our best teachers with BU’s most prestigious honor: The Metcalf Cup and Prize.

Groundbreaking research: With faculty dedicated to a creative, interdisciplinary approach to problem solving, BU has become a leading global research institution—propelled forward by over $350 million a year in sponsored program revenue.

World-class students: Elite students from all 50 states and 135 countries pursue higher education on BU campuses in Boston and at programs in L.A., D.C., and more than 30 other cities on six continents.

A city within a city: Today, 80% of our undergrads live on campus, which could explain the 525 student activity groups alone.

The greatest college town in the world: Boston. ’Nuff said.
