Dry Bean Research Assistant

Position Summary

This position assists in overseeing and coordinating laboratory and/or field operations of the applied the dry bean research program at MSU

Job Duties:

  • Assisting in planning and designing experiments, conducting experiments, and the tabulation of resultant data
  • Assist and support the associated outreach efforts
  • Assist and collaborate on applied research on important agronomic issues, including the application of new technologies, cultural practices to optimize dry bean productivity and profitability
  • Key Responsibilities:

  • Performance evaluation of dry bean varieties, evaluation of end use quality attributes
  • Assist the work with growers to conduct on-farm research and demonstrations of important dry bean production practices
  • You will support research activities of multiple principal Investigators within Plant soil and Microbial Sciences
  • Operating agriculture equipment including but not limited, tractors, sprayers, cultivators, and combines. This work will take place across the dry bean production area of Michigan and will require the transportation of equipment from site to site (SVREC, MRC and various on-farm locations).
  • Minimum Requirements

    Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in the specific field of research employment or other related science fields; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements and performing analytical and research techniques in an area related to research being performed; may require software specific to the area of research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The position may require special licensing or certification in the field related to the area of employment; must have (or be willing to obtain) a valid unexpired commercial driver's license within 6 months of hire (Class A).

    Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor or Master of Science degree from an accredited institution in a related field
  • Familiarity with statistical data analyses and software
  • Proficiency in use of technology (e.g., web research, Microsoft Office Suite, including use of word processors and spreadsheets, Adobe products, email/calendaring, distance technology, etc.) for day-to-day work, record keeping, reporting, team-based communications, and overall management
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication, and organizational skills
  • Have or be able to attain Commercial Restricted Use Pesticide (RUP) Applicator License
  • Demonstrated drive and initiative, with proven ability to manage multiple responsibilities and tasks simultaneously
  • Self-motivated with the demonstrated ability to work independently and complete tasks in a deadline driven environment
  • Actively participate in a variety of professional development opportunities to retain existing skills, and ability to quickly learn new skills and procedures
  • Thoroughness and attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams in an office or virtual environment, including the ability to serve in both leadership and contributory roles.
  • Familiar with and able to operate farm equipment
  • Excellent knowledge of computers and specific applications (Excel) (PowerPoint)
  • Ability to travel in local and surrounding communities and long distances.

    Lifting up to 50lb of the following from floor/waist height (1 hour average)

    Bags of seed in the spring, and harvest samples in the fall

    Seed and chemical containers into truck
