DEPARTMENT: Athletics
POSITION SUMMARY:
The head athletic trainer is responsible for managing the Athletic Training Department as a member of the Athletics Executive Staff and is responsible for the clinical application and administration of comprehensive health care for all student-athletes of Alma College.
SUPERVISON RECEIVED/EXERCISED;
This position reports to the director of athletics and supervises the assistant/associate athletic trainers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: – may include, but not limited to the following:
• Responsible for the recruitment and oversight of the athletic training staff, including assistant/associate athletic trainers, intern athletic trainers, athletic training students and student aides
• Develop and coordinate athletic training services, including injury prevention programs, injury evaluations, and injury management including injury treatment and rehabilitation, for all student-athletes of Alma College
• Coordinate medical coverage for the Athletics Department, including coverage at scheduled team practices and home and away competitions as necessary
• Develop and coordinate the Athletics Emergency Action Plan; responsible for annual department training and Athletics Department Adult First Aid/CPR/AED re/certifications
• Manage and oversee Secondary Insurance coverage for the student-athletes of Alma College, including relations, submission of insurance claims and all communications
• Accept designated NCAA Health Care Administrator responsibility for NCAA Rules and Regulations Policy Management and Education for student-athletes of Alma College
• Develop, coordinate, and communicate all initial physician referrals and relations with MyMichigan Wellsport, including Athletic Training room Physician’s clinic and Physical Therapy Clinic
• Oversee athletic training budget and equipment maintenance, including the management of inventory, supply ordering, and other supply needs
• Manage student athlete medical records including annual physical/medical documentation development, collection, and audit.
• Serve as a clinical preceptor and provide direct supervision of the athletic training students in the CAATE Accredited Athletic Training Program (ATP) from Central
Michigan University including the recruitment and hiring of athletic training student interns
• Cooperate with maintenance, transportation, and equipment staffs, and others who are involved in supporting the athletic programs
• Commit to and responsible for adhering to all rules and regulations set forth for the team, the College, the MIAA, and the NCAA with the utmost integrity
• Work cooperatively with personnel in athletic department, attend department meetings and activities, and always represents the College positively when interacting with the community, alumni, high school and club coaches, media and general public
• Other Duties as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Master’s degree with a minimum 2 years of athletic training experience at the collegiate level
• Certified by the BOC, State Athletic Training Licensure and familiarity with NCAA governing rules.
• Current First Aid/CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
• Ability to manage multiple tasks
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to work weekends/evenings and travel
• A valid driver’s license and good driving record
• Ability to fulfil essential functions of the position
PREFERRED QUALIFICIATIONS:
• Previous experience at NCAA Division III collegiate institution
• Experience in a residential campus environment
• Experience working with underrepresented, first-generation, Pell-eligible, and diverse populations
