About the Department:The mission of the Department of Population Health and Pathobiology is to recruit, train, inspire and graduate Doctors of Veterinary Medicine of exemplary knowledge, skill, and character. In order to maintain the intellectual and professional climate necessary to accomplish this mission, the department’s faculty will advance veterinary medical science through innovative basic and applied research, inspired mentoring of students (undergraduate, professional, residents, and graduate), excellence in clinical and diagnostic services, and innovative extension and engagement activities.
North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is a dynamic community whose members are dedicated to preparing veterinarians and veterinarian-scientists while advancing animal and human health from the cellular level through entire ecosystems. With the graduation of its first class in 1985, the CVM is one of the younger veterinary programs in the country. Despite its relative youth, the College has gained international recognition on the strength of its teaching, research, engagement, and patient care efforts and is ranked among the top 5 of the nation’s 28 colleges of veterinary medicine in the yearly U.S. News & World Report survey.Located on 180 acres near downtown Raleigh, the College encompasses 20 buildings on the main Centennial Biomedical Campus. Instruction is in three departments—Clinical Sciences, Molecular Biomedical Sciences, and Population Health and Pathobiology.
In addition to the four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, there are programs leading to master and doctoral degrees in several areas with numerous opportunities for specialization. The NC State Veterinary Medicine Poultry Health Management program is housed in the Department of Population Health and Pathobiology. The faculty, staff, residents, and students are dedicated to advancing the field of poultry health and welfare through teaching, research, and outreach programs that are responsive to the present and future needs of students, poultry and allied industries, the veterinary profession, and scientific communities. Additionally, we are committed to providing expertise, services, and resources to individuals, the poultry industry, and veterinarians.
The College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at North Carolina State University seeks applications for a tenure-track, 12-month faculty position in Poultry Virology at the rank of Assistant Professor. This role offers an exciting opportunity to establish an independent research program and contribute to advancing knowledge in the field of virology, with a focus on poultry health.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to expand and complement ongoing research within the Department of Population Health and Pathobiology, as well as collaborate with faculty across the college. Additional collaborative opportunities include engagement with the NC State Comparative Medicine Institute (CMI), a multidisciplinary research hub located on the veterinary college campus.
The individual in this position is expected to:
- Investigate the pathogenesis and/or control of viral diseases affecting poultry.
- Develop novel vaccines, prophylactic strategies, and innovative or improved diagnostic tests.
- Adapt research to address a broad range of viral diseases impacting both animal and human health.
- Implement and expand procedures used in molecular basic and applied virology to identify and characterize viruses in order to develop appropriate mitigation strategies where possible. .
- Enhance CVM’s virology research program through active contributions to the One Health initiative, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration.
Participation in CVM diagnostic services may also be a component of the role, including the development and implementation of diagnostic tools and surveillance protocols as needed.
This position is ideal for candidates who are passionate about advancing virology research and contributing to the health and well-being of animals and humans alike.Minimum Education and Experience:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent degree
Other Required Qualifications:- Candidates must show potential in research, which includes the ability to write and develop proposals and obtain extramural funding.
- Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere.
- Aptitude for and desire to teach and mentor veterinary and graduate students.
