Working Title:Assistant/Associate Professor of Theriogenology
Anticipated Hiring Range:Commensurate with experience and credentials
Work Schedule:Monday-Friday, 7:30 am-5:30 pm (covering of emergency duties is required)
Job Location:Raleigh, NC
Department :Department of Clinical Sciences
About the Department:The Department of Clinical Sciences is dedicated to excellence in educating and training veterinarians and comparative biomedical scientists, furthering health care and wellness through discovery and clinical research, providing outstanding and compassionate medical care to a diverse range of animal patients, effectively engaging the animal-owning public, government and industry partners, and providing leadership in integrating biomedical sciences to advance One Health.
North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is a dynamic community whose members are dedicated to preparing veterinarians and veterinarian scientists while advancing animal and human health from the cellular level through entire ecosystems.
With over seventeen clinical services staffed by board-certified specialists, many of whom are not only nationally but also internationally renowned, the NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH) is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. Patients benefit from the combined expertise of multiple specialists utilizing a team approach to patient health care. Each year, nearly 36,000 patients are treated in the VH. The VH provides compassionate care, state-of-the-art specialty health care, expert clinical instruction for 4th-year veterinary students from CVM, and ongoing investigation of innovative techniques and procedures to further advance the field of veterinary medicine.
NC State has had a well-established Theriogenology service with substantial contributions to the teaching, research, and clinical missions within the College. Recent changes in staffing create space for enthusiastic candidates to rebuild and re-envision what a productive service looks like. The CVM is seeking a qualified candidate for a tenure track theriogenology faculty position hiring at the rank of either assistant or associate professor.
The successful candidate will be expected to provide 24-26 weeks of clinical service annually, contribute to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) curriculum through both didactic courses and clinical rotations, and establish an independent, yet collaborative, research program. Additionally, the incumbent will be involved in the training of house officers, including residents and interns.
In the long term, the Theriogenology service aims to operate with at least two faculty members, providing clinical services at both the NC State Veterinary Hospital (serving equine and canine patients) and our satellite facility, the Theriogenology clinic at Reedy Creek Farm, both located in Raleigh, NC. Currently, the service is evenly split between equine and canine cases (50% each), a balance we wish to maintain. Organization
NC State: Think and Do
NC State was founded with a purpose: to create economic, societal and intellectual prosperity for the people of North Carolina and the country. We began as a land-grant institution teaching the agricultural and mechanical arts. Today, we're a pre-eminent research enterprise with 12 colleges excelling in all major academic fields.
Our 34,000 high-performing students take what they learn in the classroom and apply it in the real world by conducting research, working in internships and co-ops, and performing acts of world-changing service. That experiential education ensures that they leave here ready to lead the workforce. NC State's 13:1 student-faculty ratio is one of the reasons why we're the best college for your money in North Carolina (Money) and the No. 5 best value among public universities nationally (U.S. News & World Report).
Overcoming Challenges, Improving Lives
NC State is one of only two universities in the nation leading two National Science Foundation Engineering Research Centers — one developing wearable, self-powered health monitors, and the other researching smart-grid technology. We’re also leading interdisciplinary efforts to curb nuclear proliferation, help farmers confront climate change and build a new American manufacturing sector.
Our research doesn't just get published in a journal or sit on a shelf; it makes an impact. NC State is No. 6 nationwide in commercialization agreements based on university research, and we're No. 2 among universities without a medical school. Our Cooperative Extension Service provides research-based information to citizens in all 100 North Carolina counties. In addition, our industrial extension unit — Industry Expansion Solutions — has created an economic benefit for the state's manufacturers averaging $149 million per year since 2005.
Bright Minds Creating a Bold Future
NC State’s 9,000 faculty and staff are world leaders in their fields, bridging the divides between academic disciplines and training high-caliber students to meet tomorrow’s challenges. NC State students won two Goldwater scholarships, five Fulbright scholarships, one Churchill scholarship and a record-breaking 25 National Science Foundation graduate research fellowships in the 2016-2017 academic year. In addition, 25 faculty are members of the National Academies.
Our Centennial Campus, an award-winning public-private research campus, is home to more than 70 partner organizations working alongside more than 70 NC State research and academic units. Centennial is also the location of the innovative Hunt Library, which Time magazine has dubbed “the library of the future.”
