Job Summary/Description:

The successful candidate in this position will serve as both a Commercial Aviation (CAV) Program Assistant and as the CAV Academic Advisor. They will be housed in the new Aviation Training Facility (ATF) at Mathis Field. As a program assistant, they will be the front-line employee at the ATF, handling faculty needs, walk-in visitors, and general building supervision. As the CAV academic advisor, they will be responsible for advising all CAV students with less than 60 hours of completed credits and answering any general student inquiries. They will also supervise two student workers at the new ATF building to make sure the front desk and phones are covered 8-5, M-F.

Typical Duties/Job Duties:

Administrative Duties

  • Responsible for general supervision of the ASU Aviation Training Facility (ATF) building at Mathis Field.
  • Point person at the ATF, monitors the building, reporting problems to facilities or other appropriate service.
  • Front-line employee at the ATF, greeting visitors, directing students in the building and to all airport facilities, and supervising students in public areas.
  • Supports faculty members with light office work such a word processing, copying, etc.
  • Assists the CAV Program Director with student recruitment events and tours at the airport and occasionally at other locations.
  • Hires, trains, and mentors student workers that assist with above duties.
Academic Advising Duties
  • Advises CAV students with less than 60 credit hours.
  • Monitors changes in academic policy, the general education core curriculum, and any other relevant policies, processes, and procedures, communicating such changes to the Department Chair and Program Director when they affect the CAV program.
  • Acts as a liaison between the CAV program and the Center for Student Success within the NVCOB, coordinating efforts when needed.
  • Provides accountability and advocacy to students via personalized advising and probation meetings.
  • Understands the academic progress requirements of student-athletes, Carr Scholars, Texas Grant, and financial aid recipients.
  • Builds schedules for students attending New Student Orientation, focusing on creating a balanced schedule and cohort creation.
  • Builds strong, trusting relationships with students.
  • Communicates with students and families about college opportunities and programs.
  • Effectively use advising tools and software to support student success.
  • Maintains accurate advising records.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to serve students, faculty, and staff by enhancing the learning environment.
  • Knowledge of curricula and advising processes.
  • Skilled in best practices for advising, retention, and intervention.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to FERPA and student rights.
  • Ability to analyze course prerequisites and graduation/curriculum requirements.
  • Proficient in office procedures and practices.
  • Proficient in general and specific software required for the department, such as Microsoft Office, Banner, RamPort, Degree Works.
  • Knowledge of spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Ability to organize and complete tasks in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Ability to perform work requiring accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Skilled in the operation of personal computers, and other office equipment.
  • Skilled in oral and written communication.
  • Skilled in interpersonal relations.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree, and one year of office-related experience.
  • Knowledge of typical office productivity software.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in higher education, student development, aviation, or related field.

Location

History

The institution was founded in 1928 as a community college. By an act of the 58th Session of the Texas Legislature, the institution was designated as Angelo State College in 1965, the year it became a four-year, state-supported institution. The name was changed to Angelo State University in 1969. On Sept. 1, 2007, Angelo State University became a member of the Texas Tech University System.

ASU has a proud history of diversity, accepting Hispanics, who today make up more than 25 percent of the student population, from the very beginning. The institution enrolled African-Americans prior to Brown vs. Board of Education and one student broke the color barrier in Texas Intercollegiate football in 1953.

Academics

Angelo State offers courses through six colleges: Arts and Humanities; Business; Education; Health and Human Services; Science & Engineering; and Graduate Studies. The university is recognized for its strong undergraduate programs overall. For example, ASU's Physics Department has been recognized as one of the top undergraduate programs in the country. The university supports a young and vibrant Honors Program and continues a long tradition, begun in 1948, of encouraging international studies.

The university is also known for incorporating research into many undergraduate offerings. One recent bachelor's degree recipient, for instance, received the McClung Award for the Best Paper published in the BIOS, the official publication of Beta Beta Beta Biology Honor Society. Campus

Angelo State University's campus is situated on 268 acres in the center of San Angelo. The campus is lined with native live oak and pecan trees as well as imported palm trees. In addition to being one of the prettiest campuses in the region, it is one of the safest in Texas. The campus has ultramodern facilities with state-of-the-art technology support. ASU is home to the State of Texas Data Center, one of the state's two such facilities, which provide sophisticated computer processing and disaster recovery services for agencies and universities. Additionally, the university operates a 6,000-acre farm with a Management, Instruction and Research Center that includes a state-of-the-art meat laboratory.
