Position Summary:The Gillings School of Global Public Health at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is recruiting three outstanding tenure-track faculty at the assistant professor rank to expand interdisciplinary programming in the environment. This recruitment strategy will bring innovative approaches to interdisciplinary research and education. Building on Carolina’s existing strengths in the natural and social sciences, this cluster will propel the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to become a leader in global environmental research. These positions will make an important impact on the next generation of environmental engineering, science, and health professionals, specifically supporting our forward-thinking focus on promoting human and ecological health for all by identifying, understanding, and solving pressing environmental challenges. Strengthening this area of pedagogy is critical for maximizing our scholarship and research across ESE.
Successful candidates will work within the mission of ESE which is to promote human and ecological health for all by identifying, understanding, and solving pressing environmental challenges. As ESE and Gillings faculty, they will invigorate our department and the school, fostering innovation, collaboration, and impactful to improve environmental quality and environmental or human health.
The expectations for these positions include teaching courses within ESE, mentoring students, guiding postdoctoral research associates, conducting research, developing new research directions, and fostering collaborations within the Department, School, and the scientific community across the University.
We expect one or more of the hires to be focused on climate change or energy. Other notable areas of interest include, but are not limited to environmental chemistry, water engineering, data science, environmental microbiology, and industrial/occupational health. Faculty who focus on solution-oriented research to improve environmental quality and environmental or human health are of particular interest.
This position will be expected to provide leadership in undergraduate teaching and involvement of undergraduates in research through the classroom, individual research, or participation in PI-sponsored research. Additionally, the position will be required to teach 2 courses per year in alignment with our faculty workload policy and address student feedback on course-related challenges. Teaching opportunities could include both undergraduate- and graduate-level courses, including mentoring graduate students and postdoctoral scholars.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:PhD in environmental chemistry, water resources engineering, data science, environmental microbiology, industrial/occupational health, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:In addition to candidates having earned a Ph.D. in a relevant field for the positions listed above, preferred candidates will also possess the following:
- Interest in and experience working with students from diverse backgrounds;
- Demonstrated commitment to improving access to research for underrepresented groups;
- Demonstrated capacity to stimulate interdisciplinary collaborations through research, teaching, and service.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers. Carolina is about 30 miles from the state capital, Raleigh, and 20 minutes from Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Sports and athletic programs: UNC is an NCAA Division I school with 28 varsity teams. Technological facilities: Students find multiple uses for Carolina's state-of-the-art technological resources. The MetaLab oversees the development of SunSITE, one of the world's busiest digital library and electronic publishing projects.
Students may open e-mail accounts, and many use campus computer resources to construct personal Web pages. Students in residence halls have hardwired network connections to the Internet and cable television in their rooms. At the ATN Training center, students may take classes on software packages and utilities. Computer labs are available for student use all over campus.
Carolina Computing Initiative: Beginning with the freshman class of 2000, undergraduates must purchase laptop computers. The University has arranged for IBM to offer computers at excellent prices.
