Job Description Summary / TWC Summary:

This role manages and maintains operability of state-of-the-art advanced instrumentation including High Pressure Liquid Chromatography with Mass Spectroscopy (HPLC-MS), Gas Chromatography with Mass Spectroscopy (GCMS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, U-Vis Spectroscopy, High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and other tools for research.

Essential Duties Summary:

  • The Instrument Staff Specialist is responsible for a number of important functions such as (but not limited to) facilitation of pre-purchase inspections of instrumentation, facilitation of installation and acceptance of instrumentation.
  • Daily/weekly checking of instrumentation availability, setting up and tracking service contracts and visits, trouble shooting and repair of instrumentation (working with vendors when needed), giving feedback on value, need and vendor provided personnel and service contracts.
  • The Instrument Staff Specialist will enable the execution of programmatic work by ensuring that the instrument scientists are trained to the best and most applicable methods, when needed.
  • Instrument Staff Specialist will serve as a mentor for new personnel/users and visitors to TSU Department(s) of Chemistry/Environmental Science. They will also serve as a resource to offer instrumental improvements through hardware modification and/or technique improvements. they will track issues and history of instrumentation to provide a holistic view of the operation and care of the instrumentation during its research operation lifetime.
  • Ensures efficient instrument utilization by organizing the weekly execution of maintenance work.
  • Communicates with users to ensure detailed and consistent transfer of information and analysis.
  • Manages data to ensure proper storage and dissemination following analysis.
  • Maintains the instrument and detectors in a top condition, ready for use, including calibration of the instrument and detectors where required.

$15.896000 - $19.0745

Education:

Ph.D. in chemistry, biology, environmental science, physics, or related field or master’s degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science, physics, or related field with three (3) to five (5) years experience in wet and analytical chemistry techniques.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Train students on the instruments.
Skill in:

  • High Pressure Liquid Chromatography with Mass Spectroscopy (HPLC-MS),
  • Gas Chromatography with Mass Spectroscopy (GCMS),
  • Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy,
  • U-Vis Spectroscopy,
  • High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography,
  • Scanning Electron Microscopy and other tools for research.
  • Train students on the instruments.

Ability to:
  • Use job-related software and systems or similar job-related system.

Work Experience:

Three (3) to five (5) years experience in wet and analytical chemistry techniques.

Working/Environmental Conditions:

  • Work is performed within lab environment with exposure to hazardous or unpleasant conditions. Physical demands usually involve standing or moving to various labs.
  • Some stooping, lifting, or carrying objects or light weight may be required.
  • Some travel is required.
