Description:

Reporting to the Engineering Laboratory Operations Director, the Senior Laboratory Technician is responsible for the operation, repair, and maintenance of laboratory equipment in the Engineering department.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assists with the operation and supervision of the Applied Science Student Workshop.
  • Sets-up laboratory experiments and has them ready for use as required by the faculty.
  • Assists with calibrating, maintaining, and repairing lab equipment in the Engineering laboratories.
  • Ensures that all tools and materials are properly stored, secured, and maintained.
  • Assists with training students on the proper use of hand and power tools.
  • Implements all shop safety regulations and protocols per established procedures and checklists.
  • Assists faculty and students with the design and fabrication of lab experiments and research projects.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of materials and supplies.
  • Recommends and orders equipment and supplies with Laboratory Director’s approval.
  • Maintains accurate records of all equipment on loan and out for repair.
  • Assists with the supervision of student aides.
  • May perform other duties not specifically identified above, but which require the same degree of skills, and which are normally included within the above job title.
Hours: Monday through Friday from 10am to 6pm. Subject to bumping

Qualifications:

  • Must be capable of operating and maintaining basic fabrication tools such as laser cutters, 3D printers, lathes, milling machines, drill presses, band saws, table saws, and CNC equipment.
  • Basic construction, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical skills required.
  • Experience working in an academic environment supporting faculty and students.
  • Must possess the ability to prioritize multiple projects and manage concurrent assignments.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be detail-oriented, self-motivated, and well-organized.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be able to lift and maneuver equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in a similar position within a university setting is preferred.
  • OSHA 30 certification.
