LITC Fellow in Practice
Job Description:
Support the LITC director in casework and provide direct representation to taxpayers in disputes with the IRS. This includes meeting with prospective clients, drafting correspondence to the IRS and U.S. Tax Court, filing documents with the U.S. Tax Court, calling clients and opposing administrative agency employees and counsel. FIP will need to assist in managing case files, organizing documents, keeping accurate notes, and keeping all files up to date.
Produce and provide education and outreach services to low-income taxpayers throughout the grant service area. Presentations will need to be flexibly provided based on location. FIP will need to draft PowerPoints, work with students on PowerPoints, edit for content and substance. The FIP will need to commute to locations if presentations are in person.
Supervise student casework and assist in the implementation of the curriculum for the LITC course. FIP will need to review class readings, draft resource guides, and attend class when scheduled to participate in discussions. FIP will need to provide direct supervision and case strategy to student representatives. FIP will need to relay case strategy to director and update files appropriately.
Develop research and scholarship in the areas of federal, state, and local taxation geared toward issues affecting low-income taxpayers. FIP will be tasked with utilizing case information to identify systemic issues in the tax system that need to be explored further. FIP will need to be flexible and work with director to develop shared research interests.
The Levin College of Law is growing and changing daily. All College of Law community members are expected to perform other duties as assigned in furtherance of our strategic goals. This will likely include frequent communication with our Outreach and Messaging team and our Development and Alumni Affairs team.
Expected Salary:
Commensurate with experience.
Minimum Requirements:
J.D. or LL.B. from an ABA-accredited law school. Must be a member of the Florida Bar or become a member within twelve months of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
One to three years as a practicing attorney in the field of taxation
Admitted to practice law in the state of Florida.
Admitted to the U.S. Tax Court, or willing to be admitted to the U.S. Tax Court prior to starting the position.
Admitted to practice law in other federal courts.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
