Job Description:

The College of Arts & Sciences Writing Program at Boston University expects to hire several full-time Lecturers in Writing to begin in July 2025. Responsibilities include teaching three classes per semester-theme-based first-year writing seminars and/or classes for multilingual writers-and participating in program service and professional development activities. The initial term of appointment is two years, with the possibility of renewal and promotion. The 2024 starting salary is $72,000 (2025 salary under negotiation).

Required Skills

Successful candidates will have the equivalent of at least one full-time year of experience teaching writing; will be able to expand the topical range of our theme-based first-year classes; will be flexible in the range of course levels they are prepared to teach; and will have experience in at least one of the following areas: linguistic justice, critical language awareness, World Englishes, writing with generative AI, or writing in the disciplines, especially the natural or social sciences. Successful candidates will also have a demonstrable commitment to inclusive pedagogy-including teaching writing in ways that equitably serve BU's many multilingual students and in keeping with Writing Program values and the College's and University's social justice priorities.

We are committed to building a diverse faculty and program, encompassing a breadth of perspectives, identities, and backgrounds that reflect those of BU's increasingly racially and economically diverse undergraduate population. We strongly encourage candidates from historically marginalized groups to apply and are encouraged by BU's redoubled efforts to recruit and retain underrepresented faculty in initiatives including the LGBTQIA+ Center for Faculty & Staff and its series of Faculty & Staff Community Networks.

One or more of these positions will be dedicated primarily to teaching courses for students for whom English is a second or other language. Applicants who wish to be considered for the multilingual writing position should make their experience with and advocacy for multilingual writers clear; successful applicants for this position will also be familiar with current scholarship in second language writing, intercultural rhetoric, and/or other related fields.

The Writing Program is an independent instructional unit with more than fifty full-time unionized Lecturers. We offer a two-semester sequence of theme-based writing seminars through which most BU undergraduates satisfy their writing requirements (17-18 students each), and we prepare international undergraduate students for writing in their college classes through an additional two-course sequence for multilingual writers (15 students each). BU offers a rich range of resources for professional development and course enhancement. More information about the Arts & Sciences Writing Program is available at http://www.bu.edu/writingprogram/ and at https://www.bu.edu/teaching-writing/.

Submit a letter of application (addressed to Jessica Kent and Sarah Madsen Hardy, Co-chairs of the Search Committee, College of Arts & Sciences Writing Program) and a curriculum vitae to https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/29100. Applications are due January 10, 2025. Those submitted via email or through a website other than Academic Jobs Online will not be considered.

PLEASE DO NOT APPLY THROUGH THE BOSTON UNIVERSITY HR WEBSITE.

We are an equal opportunity employer, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, natural or protective hairstyle, religion, sex, age, national origin, physical or mental disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, genetic information, military service, pregnancy or pregnancy-related condition, or because of marital, parental, or veteran status. We are a VEVRAA Federal Contractor.

Organization

The Difference Is Our DNA

What compelled the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to award Boston University a grant to fight newborn mortality in Zambia? Why did Martin Luther King, Jr. adopt BU as a place where he could hone his message of justice and equality? And what is the catalyst that prompts 32,557 students from 135 countries to call BU their home every semester? It’s in our DNA: an inherent desire in each of our students, faculty, and staff to vigorously and dauntlessly pursue knowledge—and embrace the unlimited possibilities that come with it.

A Community Unlike Any Other

As you can see below, it takes people, ideas, and a little luck (Boston, you’re our town) to make BU what it is today: one of the most dynamic universities in the world.

Celebrated thinkers: On any given day, students will find themselves mesmerized by Nobel Prize winners, a poet laureate, and the first biomedical engineer ever to receive a MacArthur Foundation “Genius Award,” among others.

Extraordinary teaching: When a classroom starts to percolate with new ideas, it’s because our faculty of scholars and accomplished practitioners know how to ignite students’ imaginations. That’s why we reward our best teachers with BU’s most prestigious honor: The Metcalf Cup and Prize.

Groundbreaking research: With faculty dedicated to a creative, interdisciplinary approach to problem solving, BU has become a leading global research institution—propelled forward by over $350 million a year in sponsored program revenue.

World-class students: Elite students from all 50 states and 135 countries pursue higher education on BU campuses in Boston and at programs in L.A., D.C., and more than 30 other cities on six continents.

A city within a city: Today, 80% of our undergrads live on campus, which could explain the 525 student activity groups alone.

The greatest college town in the world: Boston. ’Nuff said.
