Position Title: Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Philosophy

2. JOB PURPOSE / ROLE: 

Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be responsible for conducting high quality research in the field of philosophy, disseminating its inputs, and participate in the ongoing research projects related to the area of expertise aligned with the SUAD strategic objectives and UN SDG. Additionally, they will be involved in delivering undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

4. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES: 


Key Priority and Key Activities 


Research 



  • Conduct independent and collaborative research in philosophy, preferably in alignment with at least one of the SUAD strategic objectives ( Urban and global societies , Artificial intelligence , Environment , Heritage ) . 

  • Actively participate in SUAD s ongoing projects. 

  • Design and execute experiments, analyse data, and interpret results (if applicable). Collaborate with researchers and professionals within and outside the institution to foster interdisciplinary research. 

  • Disseminate and present research findings at academic conferences, seminars, symposia and to the broader public. 

  • Engage in professional development opportunities for growth aimed at enhancing knowledge in the relevant area of research. 

  • Prepare and publish high-quality research articles in peer-reviewed journals (Top 25% journals) with a minimum of two peer-reviewed articles annually.

  • Apply Open Science practices in their own research and advocate for the broader adoption of Open Science principles across the scientific community. 

  • Favour research partnerships and networks with public and private sector partners to secure new projects and funding. 

  • Actively participate in securing research funding and contribute to the development of grant proposals. 

  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate students, providing guidance on research projects. 


Teaching 



  • Deliver teaching courses to facilitate student learning outcomes and aim for teaching excellence for the relevant department, including but not limited to preparing teaching material in advance; communicating subject matter in a way students can understand; observing student progress and learning styles; reacting appropriately to students needs; responding, where appropriate, to student questions outside class times; preparing for contingencies in course delivery etc. 

  • Guide and mentor students in research methods, project planning, academic writing, and theses. 

  • Develop and encourage teaching modes based on projects and students autonomous work, and research-oriented teaching. 

  • Participate and contribute toward the development of innovative pedagogical tools and methods within the department. 


Examination Duties  



  • Invigilate examinations when required, to ensure that exams are carried out according to the rules set out by the exam board; allow each candidate to sit the exam in the same conditions; and control cheating. 

  • To support and participate in examination activities such as paper setting, assessing answer sheets, students presentation, and practical evaluation etc. 


Administrative Activities



  • Participate in departmental meetings, seminars, and other academic activities. 

  • Liaise with the Academic Coordinator to arrange the teaching requirements, such as lesson schedules; teaching materials; submission of student assessments; addressing student special needs for testing etc. 

  • Serving as a referee for students and assisting in the preparation of research grant applications.

  • Follow department policies, processes, standard operating procedures, and instructions so that work is carried out in a controlled and consistent manner. 


Related Assignments   



  • Perform additional tasks or assignments as directed by the Line Manager, within the scope of the responsibilities outlined in the preceding Job Description. 


5. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, & SKILLS: 

Minimum Qualifications: 



  • Doctoral degree in the field of philosophy, or closely related discipline.


Minimum Experience: 



  • Ability to conduct high-quality research and to publish in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Ability to disseminate research outputs at academic conferences, seminars, and symposia. 

  • Teaching experience at the university level.  


 

Job-Specific Skills: 



  • Strong research, writing and analytical skills. 

  • Familiarity with interdisciplinary research approaches. 

  • Ability to effectively communicate research findings at conferences, seminars, symposia and through academic publications. 

  • Ability to work with interdisciplinary teams and to integrate diverse perspectives into research projects. 

  • Experience in engaging with various stakeholders including academic peers, industry partners, and policy makers to enhance research impact. 


 



  • Pedagogical skills for teaching. 

  • Competence in designing and delivering course content at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. 

  • Ability to guide and mentor students in research methods, project planning, and academic writing. 


 



  • Strong interpersonal skills that encourage a good working environment. 

  • Innovative thinking and flexibility. 

  • Languages: English and French is mandatory, and Arabic is an added advantage.
