Responsibilities

The Department of Art Education at Florida State University seeks a new tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor and invites applications from scholars with a commitment to social justice art education and the ability to further our mission to empower people to empower people through the arts.

  • A qualified and interested candidate would be expected to teach and develop graduate-level courses in arts administration and/or museum education and visitor-centered curation and supervise internships for both residential and online programs. The teaching load is 6 credit-hours per semester.
  • The candidate is expected to collaborate with others to meet best practice guidelines for residential and distance learning course design and implementation, as well as working closely with recruitment staff at the College level to grow enrollment. The Department also expects the candidate to supervise theses and dissertations, when qualified.
  • Additional responsibilities will include research, committee work, curriculum development across the Department, service to the university, community, and professional activities in the field that are consistent with departmental expectations.
  • We are especially interested in candidates who will thrive at a public research university while contributing (through their teaching, research, and/or service) to our college and university’s standard of continued excellence.
Qualifications
  • PhD in Arts Administration or a closely related field (e.g., Nonprofit or philanthropic Studies, Cultural and Creative Industries, Museum and Heritage Studies, Art Education, Public Administration and Management).
  • Experience in facilitating learning or leading educational activities.
  • An emerging or established record of published research.
  • Evidence of strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • National presence in arts administration with an emphasis or experience in museums through publications, presentations, and professional activities. This position will interact with the museum education and visitor-centered curation program with the potential for cross-program teaching and collaboration.
  • University teaching experience in arts administration and/or museum education is preferred. Courses may include Leading Arts Organizations, Arts in Community Engagement, Principles of Arts Administration, Cultural Policy, Grant Writing, Art Museum Education, and Museum Education.
  • Experience with developing and delivering residential and distance learning courses at the higher education level.
  • Experience or strong interest in advising and mentoring graduate students, including working closely with PhD students on their dissertation development and research projects, guiding them through each stage of the research process, and fostering their academic and professional growth.

Department of Art Education: The Department of Art Education maintains a strong commitment to the philosophy of art for life and especially social justice issues. It is the oldest department of its kind in the Southeast and one of the elite art education departments in North America and is solely a graduate program department. The department offers master’s degrees and a doctorate in art education, arts administration, and art therapy, and museum education and visitor-centered curation. The department is housed in a newly renovated, state-of-the-art, LEED-certified facility with the Departments of Interior Design and Art History from the College of Fine Arts. As the oldest degree of its kind in the state of Florida, the Department of Art Education has awarded degrees in Arts Administration since 1984. In addition to the Master’s, we offer a PhD in Art Education with majors in Arts Administration and Museum Education & Visitor-centered Curation. We also have a newly established EdD online program in art education or visitor-centered curation. Intent on achieving our mission, we aim to educate aspiring cultural leaders about the practice and theory of socially responsible arts administration.

College of Fine Arts: The Florida State University College of Fine Arts is a place where learning and creativity are nurtured through instruction, research, and practice. The College is a close-knit community of faculty, students, and professionals that functions as an art and design conservatory and liberal arts hybrid within a major research university. It is home to a unique combination of visual arts, performing art, and design studios, classrooms, performance spaces, galleries, and a museum. The current student enrollment encompasses approximately 850 undergraduate and 300 graduate students, working to become successful artists, designers, researchers, and professionals in their fields. The College comprises the School of Dance, the School of Theatre, the Department of Interior Architecture & Design, the Department of Art, the Department of Art Education, and the Department of Art History. It is supported by more than 100 full-time faculty, 50 adjunct faculty, 110 staff members, and a budget of approximately $19.3 million.

The College also houses several non-academic units, including the Museum of Fine Arts (MoFA), the Facility for Arts Research (FAR), and the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography (MANCC). Many of the College’s programs rank among the most respected in the nation and feature specialized programs that leverage relationships between departments and museums to enrich the degree-based curriculum.
