Job Description:

This position will focus on the biophysical and biomechanical mechanisms underpinning vascular integrity and endothelial cell barrier function. The successful candidate is expected to have instrument-building skills and a solid math background. They will learn to use atomic force microscopy (AFM) and optical microscopy to quantitatively study the kinetic and mechanical responses of human endothelial cell variants stimulated with barrier-altering biochemical agents. The candidate will work as an integral member of a group with expertise in biophysics, cell biology, biochemistry, animal models, and genetics and proteomics of lung disease

  • Conduct Advanced Research: Utilize scanning probe microscopy and other advanced techniques to investigate the assembly, structure, and function of diverse biological systems. Design and execute experiments to gather and analyze data effectively.
  • Develop and Maintain Laboratory Protocols: Establish, refine, and ensure adherence to laboratory protocols, ensuring a safe and efficient research environment. Train team members on best practices and procedural updates.
  • Communicate Research Progress: Regularly present both formal and informal updates on research findings and progress at internal meetings. Share research results at national and international conferences. Prepare and submit research manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals, contributing to the advancement of the field.
  • Assist in lab coordination and equipment maintenance and maintain a safe work environment, maintaining glassware and other laboratory equipment or materials using appropriate standards; keeps laboratory area clean.


Expected Salary:

Commensurate with experience.

Minimum Requirements:

Requires a Ph.D. or M.D. degree in a relevant scientific/medical discipline.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Preferred Ph.D. or M.D. degree in Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences, or related Engineering fields.
  • Ability and interest to learn cell culture methods.
  • Experience programming using MatLab, Python, or another programming language.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal guidance, as well as in a team environment.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills necessary to work in a collaborative research environment and to document and present research results.
  • Experience writing publications and publication record in refereed journals.
  • Experience with optical and mechanical measurements. Data analysis.
  • Experience with soft lithography, microfabrication, and cleanroom use.
  • Familiarity with the biology of inflammation and lung disorders including but not limited to acute lung injury, ARDS, ventilator induced lung injury, pulmonary hypertension, fibrosis.
  • Experience writing reports and proposals.
