Secondary STEM Education, Assistant Professor, Tenure Track

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the School of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications for appointment to a 9-month tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor to begin August 2025. Salary and terms of appointment are commensurate with prior experience. A successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to human centered practices in education through their scholarship, teaching, and service/leadership. They should also have a demonstrated potential for engaging in high-quality research/scholarship.

Our Secondary Education program prepares teachers and teacher leaders who excel in fostering the development 6-12 students’ social/emotional and critical processing skills, with content area pedagogical expertise in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Sciences. This work is accomplished through research aligned practices that meet the evolving needs of today’s learners. We are situated within a diverse array of programs housed in the School of Education and Human Sciences, which also has additional programs in teacher education (including special education), school psychology, counseling, educational leadership and administration, human sciences, and more. Our faculty possess a strong commitment to scholarship, research, creative pursuits, community engagement, and service.

The successful candidate will engage in scholarly activities, including research publications, external funding, and professional presentations; teach graduate courses; supervise field experiences, advise graduate students and mentor graduate student research; and collaborate with area schools/agencies. Additional responsibilities include service to our program, department, school, university, the field of STEM education, and other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate in STEM education (including Computer Science Education, Mathematics Education, Science Education, or Engineering Education)
  • Experience with coursework appropriate to education as a discipline as well as to educator preparation licensure programs (e.g., theory, classroom management, pedagogy)
  • Record of scholarly publications and presentations on topics related to STEM teaching and learning
  • Strong interest in community, school, and classroom-based research.
  • Demonstrated work in advancing access to quality education for all learners and/or the educators who serve them
  • Prior work or interests in K-12 public education, including at least two years of teaching at the secondary (6-12) level

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in computer science education, computing systems, programming languages, artificial intelligence, and/or data science
  • College/university teaching experience
  • At least 3-5 years of teaching experience at the secondary (6-12) level
  • Knowledge and background in integrated STEM related pedagogical advances and current trends and advancements in learning technology and its application in STEM classrooms
  • Experience in developing and implementing innovative STEM curricula
