About the Department:The School of Architecture offers undergraduate and graduate degrees including accredited Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) and Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) degrees, a pre-professional Bachelor of Environmental Design in Architecture (BEDA), and a post-professional Master of Advanced Architectural Studies (MAAS). It also offers graduate certificates in City Design, Energy and Technology, and Public Interest Design, and a Concentration in History and Theory. The School of Architecture is part of the College of Design at North Carolina State University, which includes academic departments of Graphic and Experience Design and Industrial Design (GD/ID), Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning (LAEP), Media Arts, Design and Technology (MAD Tech), a Ph.D. in Design, and a Doctor of Design (D.Des.)
Essential Job Duties:The School of Architecture is inviting applications for a full-time, non-tenure track Teaching Professor position on a three-year contract. This role offers the opportunity to teach architecture studios at all levels, core lecture courses, and advanced seminars aligned with the candidate’s expertise. Applicants should demonstrate both experience and potential for future development in scholarly activities and teaching, particularly in the area of building design and technology, as well as design excellence.
The successful candidate’s primary duties will be teaching and service activities, with secondary expectations of productive scholarship and/or creative artistry, which might include professional practice. Teaching and scholarship focus areas may include material technologies, exterior assemblies, architectural detailing, sustainable and energy-efficient technologies, systems integration, and resilient design. We are particularly interested in candidates with an interest in contemporary design practice.
In addition, the ideal candidate will be expected to:
- Prepare students to be successful in academic and professional settings by helping them to develop critical thinking and design skills.
- Advance the School of Architecture’s teaching culture and research enterprise in topics that are critical to contemporary and future practice.
- Engage professional practice and industry partners in North Carolina and/or beyond.
- Seek collaborators within and across departments and colleges in the university.
Essential duties for the position include:
- Teach 18-21 credits per year (typically one 6-credit studio and one 3-credit course per semester in the School of Architecture programs).
- Serve on school, college, and university committees and task forces.
- Develop scholarship and/or architectural design practice.
Other responsibilities as needed by the department head.
Minimum Education and Experience:- Terminal Degree in Architecture (Master’s) or related field.
Other Required Qualifications:
- Grounded in contemporary design concepts, principles, practices, methods, and tools across a range of media.
- Ability to contribute to the excellence of the academic community through research, creative, and scholarly activities, teaching, and service.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Experience in teaching at the college level and professional practice
- Professional licensure in Architecture.
