Job Summary
The High School Equivalency Program seeks applicants for a full-time Limited Term Professional position that is proficient in reading, writing, and speaking both English and Spanish; committed to providing high-quality instruction to students seeking to obtain their General Educational Development (GED) certificate. This position is responsible for conducting GED preparation classes in both English and Spanish and focusing on all subject areas covered in the GED exam: Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science. Classes may be offered in a hybrid format, combining both in-person and online instruction.
Flexibility is required as it involves working evenings and weekends to accommodate the schedules of our student population.The tentative class schedule is Monday-Thursday for 3 hours after regular work hours and 3 hours on the weekend. This position ends September 30, 2025.
This position will instruct students, manage laboratory, shop, studio, and/or classroom activities for an assigned academic or clinical program.
Grant Funded Position: This is a grant funded position; therefore, the university will incur no salary obligation beyond funding derived from this source. This position will continue as long as adequate funds are available.
ResponsibilitiesTypical Allocation of Duties:
Instruct students - 50%
Instruct students in assigned laboratory, shop, studio, and/or classroom setting.
Monitor students - 20%
Monitor students to ensure compliance with lab, shop, studio, and/or program rules and/or requirements.
Advise and assist - 15%
Advise and assist students.
Assignment-specific duties - 15%
Perform a variety of assignment-specific duties which may include maintaining equipment, purchasing supplies and materials, assisting with curriculum development, inputting data, and other specialized tasks.
Supervisor Expectations:
- Instructs and guides the class in an efficient and effective manner.
- Prepares lesson plans and classroom activities thoroughly for each instructional hour.
- Provides instruction in core subjects in a multi-level, varied age-range classroom of native Spanish-speakers.
- Designs curriculum, a schedule of instruction, assists with establishing goals and objectives for the course, selecting text, and constructing a syllabus and translates materials as needed.
- Facilitates new student orientation as needed.
- Grades and returns students work in a timely manner.
- Counsels students regarding their grades and progress in the course.
- Maintains accurate records of student assignments, attendance and assesses and reports student progress on a regular basis.
- Actively pursues student retention.
- Remains up to date on current teaching methods and technology in the classroom.
- Attends professional development opportunities when possible.
- Attends National HEP CAMP Conference.
- Maintains communication with instructors from other divisions in order to keep courses up to date and appropriate.
- Attends student formal graduations.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience teaching in Spanish and English and in an online/distance education environment.
- One year of classroom instruction experience teaching adult students.
Required Experience
Bachelor's degree and 1-year teaching experience with a GED/High School Equivalency Program or 2-year teaching experience in another classroom context.
