Position description

The University of California, Berkeley invites applications for approved teaching-track positions in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the Assistant and Associate/Full Teaching Professor levels. Rank will be determined based on qualifications and experience. There are two positions available, one at the Assistant Teaching Professor rank and one open-rank position (Assistant, Associate or Full). Teaching Professors are full members of the academic senate and are eligible for Security of Employment, equivalent to tenure.

The responsibilities of Teaching Professors emphasize teaching courses and contributing to the teaching mission of the department. Teaching Professors are also expected to maintain an active program of educational and/or disciplinary scholarship, and to contribute to department service as senate faculty.

We seek candidates who have demonstrated that they are promising or established computer science and/or data science educators and who are interested in a teaching-focused career. Applicants should be excited about the opportunity to teach large courses.

The Assistant Teaching Professor position is in Computer Science within the EECS department. The open-rank position will also start in Computer Science and will participate in teaching and course development for the Data Science Major, an innovative group major offered by the EECS and Statistics faculty, with participation from colleagues across campus. As Berkeley's first new college in more than 50 years, CDSS is in an exciting growth phase. Candidates will have the opportunity to actively shape its future through their participation in the college, including the potential formation of new interdisciplinary departments. The open-rank position (or a fraction thereof) may transfer to such a new unit, if and when established.

About the Department: The EECS department is part of the College of Engineering and the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS). It offers one of the strongest research and instructional programs in this field anywhere in the world. The scale and quality of our programs directly shape the computing industry through our graduates, and teaching professors play a central role in guiding this next generation. Our key strength is our array of cross-disciplinary, team-driven projects. The integration of EE and CS forms the core, with strong interactions that extend into many other disciplines.

Commitment to Equity and Inclusion: The department is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents. We are also interested in candidates who have had non-traditional career paths or who have taken time off for family reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia. For information about potential relocation to Berkeley, or career needs of accompanying partners and spouses, please visit: http://ofew.berkeley.edu/new-faculty"

Financial and in-kind resources are available to new faculty to pursue activities that help accelerate our efforts to achieve our equity and inclusion goals, with the full backing of the College. Examples of ongoing programming at the College of Engineering are available at: https://engineering.berkeley.edu/about/equity-and-inclusion/ and the College of CDSS at: https://data.berkeley.edu/equity-inclusion. Details of the EECS department's programs and resources dedicated to ensuring a welcoming, fair and inclusive environment can be found at: https://eecs.berkeley.edu/about/diversity.

Authorization to Release Information: The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. Consistent with this commitment, UC Berkeley requires all applicants for Senate faculty positions to complete, sign, and upload an Authorization of Information Release form into AP Recruit as part of their application. If an applicant does not include the signed authorization, the application will be considered incomplete, and as with any incomplete application, will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, applicants will only be subject to reference checks if and when they are selected as the candidate to whom the hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer.
