Description:Reporting to the Director of the Reading/Writing Learning Clinic, the Part-Time Literacy Specialist works with elementary (grades 1st-6th) and/or secondary students (middle school and high school) attending the literacy programs at the Reading/Writing Learning Clinic. The Literacy Specialist provides small group and/or individual instruction focusing on the development of proficient reading and writing strategies within a workshop approach to instruction. For the summer literacy program, applicants must be available to work part-time Monday through Friday during regular business hours.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Plans curriculum for each instructional session informed by an understanding of literacy from a socio-cultural and socio-psycholinguistic perspective. Instruction is organized based on students’ literacy strengths and needs and provides opportunities for students to make use of 21st century literacies.
- Conducts initial and final assessments.
- Communicates with parents during parent teacher conferences.
- Keeps detailed records of students’ files.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree in Literacy Studies, Literacy, Reading or another related field with certification as NYS Literacy Specialist grades birth-6 and/or grades 5-12 required.
- Minimum 1-3 years of related experience.
- Candidates with other related certifications with relevant experience may be considered.
- Experience with formal and informal reading and writing assessments.
- Demonstrated ability to teach reading and writing, and experience with developing a reading and writing workshop.
- Commitment to working with a diverse population.
- Collaborative, organized, and detail oriented.
- Successful candidates will have demonstrated a commitment to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in an educational environment.
- One or more years’ experience working with students with reading and writing difficulties is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with miscue analysis.
