The Department of History is seeking to hire two Research Assistant Professors or Research Associate Professors in digital humanities. Area of specialization is entirely open. The appointees will contribute, in terms of teaching and administration, to the department s new Master of Arts program in Digital History in Global Asia, set to launch in the academic year 2024-25. Candidates with expertise in digital methods for historical analysis, as well as knowledge and practical skills in using digital applications for research and pedagogy, will have an advantage. Proficiency in one or more of the following digital applications/skills will also be advantageous: QGIS (Geographic Information System), Gephi, Tableau, Excel, SketchUp and Visual Novel (3D rendering and visual storytelling), Python, Optical Character Recognition (OCR), Natural Language Processing (NLP), and AntConc. Candidates with expertise in the latest development in the field of digital history, with specialization in any period or region of the history of Asia and/or global or transnational history are especially encouraged to apply.


The appointees are expected to conduct research, publish scholarly outputs in international journals and/or with leading publishers, and apply for competitive grants administered by the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong. They will teach courses in their areas of specialty (typically two to four courses per academic year, subject to mutual agreement) and are required to advise capstone projects in the new MA program. The appointees will also assume key roles in the administration of the new MA programme and the Department of History at large. The appointees may also be considered to serve as the Director of the new MA programme.


General Requirements


The applicants should have a PhD degree in history, digital humanities, or a relevant discipline by the time of appointment in August of 2024. Appointment at the associate level (i.e., Research Associate Professor) is possible, if the candidate has five or more years of relevant experience. Relevant teaching experience and a good research record are essential. Experience in curricular design will be an advantage. The appointee should have a strong commitment to teaching excellence and services to the Department and the University community, and to engage actively in quality research and publication.


Appointment


The conditions of appointment will be competitive. The rank and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity and incoming passage and baggage allowance for the eligible appointee.


Initial appointment will be made on a fixed term contract for a period of two or three years, starting from August 2024. Renewal of contract may be considered, subject to availability of resources, performance review, and mutual agreement.
