The Department of Biology at Texas Southern University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position with a 9-month academic appointment beginning January 1, 2025. Applicants will be considered for the faculty title of Assistant Professor (tenure-track). Texas Southern University offers a competitive package, laboratory space, and state-of-the-art research facilities. The department is well equipped to support the development of extramurally funded research programs in neuroscience, plant physiology, plant biology, general biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, and graduate program. The department also offers great opportunity to collaborate with other researchers in an interdisciplinary program in biomedical sciences, chemistry, environmental engineering, and computational sciences.
Candidates for this position are expected to strengthen and complement our research in the Biology and Environmental Toxicology Graduate Program. The selected finalist will establish independent research programs that successfully attract extramural funding, supervise graduate and undergraduate research, actively contribute to departmental development, and engage in innovative teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
Teaches, with the discipline and oversight necessary, courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Conducts independent research program to include both undergraduate and graduate degree pursuing students. Develops an externally funded research program, publishes, and presents the results of their scholarship to their specific academic and professional scientific community of respected scholars. Participates in scholarly activities to the department, college, university, and community-at-large. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: curriculum development, department and general education assessment, advisement, recruitment, retention and mentoring of students, laboratory development, developing web- supplemented courses, along with incorporating evolving and appropriate technology into classes and labs.

Essential Duties Summary:

  • Teaches biology courses at the undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Advises undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Establish independent research program.
  • Attract extramural research funds.
  • Engage in laboratory research and scholarly activities.
  • Supervise graduate and undergraduate research.
  • Teach and assess didactic and experiential programs in classroom, online, laboratory and institutional settings.
  • Participate in professional activities including internal and external conferences and seminars.
  • Provide academic advising for students in the department in form of assessment, evaluation, and mentoring.
  • Provides oversight of laboratory facilities, supplies, and materials.
  • Provides service to college, university, and the community.
  • Performs other job duties as required as assigned.
  • Serves on departmental and college committees.
  • Participates in professional activities including internal and external conferences and seminars.
  • Other duties within the range of skills normally associated with a position of this classification in an evolving teaching and learning environment.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Hiring Range:

$51,541.00 - $70,000.00

Education:

A Ph.D. in Biological Sciences or a closely related field or a related discipline with substantial postdoctoral training is required.

Knowledge of:

  • The applicants must be able to conduct independent and collaborative research and possess the professional knowledge in teaching relevant courses, the ability to involve both undergraduate and graduate students in research activities, and a commitment to educate a diverse body of students in Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
  • Candidates should demonstrate experience critical to an innovative and accessible educational environment. The applicants should be willing to train students to succeed, contribute, and excel in an increasingly diverse, global, and interconnected world.
  • Applicant should be a dynamic individual with demonstrated skills to develop a strong research program, attract extramural research funds, supervise graduate and undergraduate research, teach graduate and undergraduate courses, and develop new courses and curricula.
  • Applicants should provide evidence of strong potential for significant productivity in research and ability for both independent and collaborative research.
