Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) seek candidates at the Associate or Full Professor level in the tenure track to lead the development of a scientific Program within the newly established CHOP CVI. Expertise is required in the specific area of the fundamental and/or translational research areas related to the broad area of pediatric heart and vascular diseases. The Director will recruit new faculty to the emerging Program and serve a key leadership role in the development of the CHOP CVI. Applicants must have an M.D., M.D./Ph.D., Ph.D., or equivalent degree and have demonstrated excellent qualifications in education.
CHOP is a world-class leader in the delivery of pediatric care, research, and training pediatric leaders of the future. The pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery groups within the CHOP Cardiac Center are well-known as innovative leaders in the care of children with congenital forms of heart and vascular disease, and in the development of breakthrough therapeutics and diagnostics. Recently, the CHOP CVI was launched with the primary mission of establishing a world-class comprehensive research center that spans basic discovery to translation and clinical implementation relevant to pediatric heart and vascular diseases. The emerging CHOP CVI will be linked in collaborative partnership with the UPenn CVI, home to renowned basic and translational scientists. This partnership will provide support and infrastructure for discovery, translational, and clinical research aimed at cardiovascular health and disease across the entire lifespan. Thematic scientific programs created within the CHOP CVI will dovetail and complement existing UPenn CVI Programs and Centers. We seek an energetic scientist with a well-established research group to lead the development of the first CHOP CVI scientific Program.
Teaching responsibilities may include didactic sessions with graduate students and postdoctoral trainees, mentoring within the laboratory and the teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows, as well as formal lecture opportunities within the department.
Clinical responsibilities may include patient care depending on the candidate, including but not limited to out-patient consultations, in-patient consultations, and in-patient attending responsibilities.
Research or scholarship responsibilities may include maintaining an active research laboratory and supervising students, postdoctoral fellows, and research staff. Additional responsibilities include writing grants, reports, and manuscripts, developing collaborative and independent research programs, and coordinating NIH-funded grant efforts with local, national, and international collaborators.
Successful applicants will have evidence of sustained federal funding and demonstrated success in fundamental and/or translational research relevant to pediatric cardiovascular diseases including but not limited to cardiac development and regeneration, genetics and gene editing-based therapeutics, immune/metabolic origins of disease, and bioengineering approaches to cardiovascular therapeutics. Responsibilities will include maintaining a vibrant research program, recruiting faculty to the newly emerging program, and serving as a member of the strategic leadership team leading the development of the new CHOP CVI.
The primary faculty appointment will be in the Department of Pediatrics or the department in the Perelman School of Medicine that provides the best scientific fit. The University of Pennsylvania is a vibrant team-science-oriented environment with elite biomedical research collaborators. The Perelman School of Medicine, with world-class medical, biological, and population scientists, is part of an integrated campus including the School of Arts & Sciences, the School of Engineering & Applied Science and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, which provides the ideal setting for cross-disciplinary collaboration and impactful quantitative research.
A generous recruitment package as well as excellent institutional and core research resources will be provided.
