GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:
Under limited supervision, the instructor is responsible for teaching ESL courses to students enrolled in Kirkwood's secondary programs. Instruction will take place face-to-face in Coralville, though there might be opportunities to teach in Cedar Rapids or online if there are also openings at those locations in the future. At times there might be travel to other Kirkwood locations for meetings. The instructor also assists students in transitioning from ESL courses to Kirkwood related work training and higher education opportunities in collaboration with other Kirkwood staff.
Classes are held Monday through Thursday. The session dates for this program year include: October 28-December 19, January 21-March 6, March 24-May 8, May 12-June 5. Class times are 9:10am-11:10am, 11:25am-1:25pm, and 6:00pm-8:00pm. There are currently two openings, both for Low Beginning in the evening (6:00pm-8:00pm). One position is to share a class with another instructor (two evenings per week instead of four). The total hours per week for one class equates to 10 hours (5 hours for the shared class), with limited extra hours being available for team meetings, special projects, and professional development. While previous teaching experience (any subject, but literacy, language, or ESL preferred) is encouraged, there is no licensing requirement.
Position involves working in an office setting. Occasional (10-33%) standing, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Constant (67-100%) sitting, walking, repetitive motion, talking and hearing.
