Position Summary

Join our team as the Department Coordinator, where you’ll play a vital role in supporting our military and cadet corps. Under the guidance of the Department Chair, you’ll handle administrative tasks, coordinate special events, and ensure compliance with University and Army regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide administrative and clerical support to the Department Chair and staff.
  • Act as a liaison between the department and campus services.
  • Coordinate military training and special events for active-duty military and cadet corps.
  • Handle sensitive information and situations with discretion and compliance with University and Privacy Act regulations.
  • Ensure all officer education and training activities comply with State, University, and United States Army regulations.

Position Information

  • This is a part-time (0.6 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
  • This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
  • Standard SDSU work hours for this position are Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
  • This appointment is for a 10/12 pay-plan position. The employee works 10 months per year and is paid over 12 months, with June 2025 and July 2025 as the anticipated off months.
  • This position is approved for partial telecommuting with onsite work in San Diego.

Department Summary

The Department of Military Science (Army ROTC), one of ten instructional units within the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts, houses the Army ROTC detachment at San Diego State University. Military Science’s primary responsibility is to administer the Army ROTC Program, which provides qualified students with the academic and military preparation required in earning a commission as a U.S. Army officer. The detachment is comprised of primary Cadre members and support staff of twelve (12) Army Faculty members, three (3) Contractors and four (4) Government Service employees. This collective team provides officer leadership training and education to approximately 130 cadets each term. One-third of these students are “cross-enrolled” that is, they are pooled from the five major campuses in San Diego County as well as the numerous community colleges in the area. The Department is supported by one part-time Administrative Support Coordinator and a part-time Student Assistant.

Education and Experience

Entry to this classification requires a fully functional knowledge of and skill in standard office procedures and practices, as well as an ability to understand and operate in a variety of organizational structures. Additionally, incumbents are expected to have a thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and be able to clearly communicate orally and in writing. Some positions may require a knowledge of business mathematics beyond basic arithmetic. The ability to use and quickly learn new office support technology systems and software packages is also a prerequisite.

These qualifications would normally be obtained through a high school program, technical/vocational program, or their equivalents combined with several years of related office work experience.

  • Experience maintaining budgets.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures for ROTC programs is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $1,932 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,220 - $5,060 per month.
