Overview

The Medical Assistant, Casual Hourly, provides patient care and operational support to Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Registered Nurses within the clinical areas of University Health Services. The Medical Assistant, Casual Hourly, responsibilities include direct patient care, general housekeeping, clerical, food service, inventory and supply maintenance, and other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

Clinical Care, 50%

Assists Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Registered Nurses (clinicians) as directed to provide care for patients.

  • Enter students into the Infirmary schedule.
  • Takes vital signs: temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, and breath alcohol analysis, and reports any abnormalities to clinicians.
  • Assists patients with ambulation and activities of daily living as needed.
  • Monitors patients on a one-to-one basis as directed by clinicians.
  • Reports any pertinent information regarding patient status to clinicians.
  • Performs point of care diagnostic tests as directed by clinicians, based on scope of practice.
  • Performs hand off care with oncoming and outgoing Nurse Aides/Nursing Assistants/Medical Assistants.

 

Assists Registered Nurse to provide emergency after-hours care to students.

Other clinical tasks as delegated by the Registered Nurse on duty.

 

Operations, 30%

 

Assists in providing a clean, safe environment in the Infirmary unit and other areas as needed/designated.

  • Keeps patient rooms clean and tidy
  • Changes bed linens
  • Cleans discharge rooms
  • Monitors cleanliness and tidiness of bathrooms
  • Disposes of dirty linen in laundry bags and store dirty linen in linen hampers in the designated area
  • Cleans surfaces in utility rooms and nurses' station
  • Cleans exam room after use
  • Maintains cleanliness in patient kitchen
  • Cleans and store equipment

 

Daily stocking and maintenance of supplies

  • Infirmary kitchen items
  • Linen
  • Treatment room

 

Administrative, 20%

  • Documents patient data (temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, and breath alcohol analysis) into to electronic health record (EHR/EMR)
  • Assists with admission and orientation to unit, assists in preparation of hard copy charts
  • Orders and distributes meals and snacks to patients
  • Answers telephone
  • Directs visitors
  • Scans documents into the EHR/EMR, makes photocopies of patient documents

 

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

 

Essential Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Certified Medical Assistant or Registered Medical Assistant
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certifications
  • Technologically proficient
  • Ability to move freely throughout the unit and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to physically move/ambulate patients
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Flexibility
  • Dependability – attendance is critical
  • Be knowledgeable in principles and methodologies (e.g., Plan-Do-Study-Act, Root Cause Analysis, measurement, data collection, and analysis) needed to support and lead Quality Improvement projects and activities and/or willing to attend UHS-based Quality Improvement basic training within first 6-months of hire.
  • Respects the cultures and identities of others.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a healthcare setting
  • Familiarity with total work systems (such as the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, and Baldrige National Quality Program); and reviewing and analyzing data.
  • Training in health equity and other diversity and inclusion topics.
