Supervisor of machine shop in a university setting, including experience with all shop operations and equipment, ability to quote and schedule jobs and order material, train new employees, advise and instruct students in proper design for machine operations. Expert CNC programmer and operator.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:- Programs and operates CNC mills and lathes.
- Provides cost estimates on jobs.
- Operates various shop equipment.
- Conducts tours and training for organized classes, senior design and competition teams.
- Plans, assigns and supervises shop operations.
- Instructs the users of the shop on proper use of tools and safety regulations.
- Maintains inventory, orders materials through UTA and outside vendors.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High school graduation supplemented by vocational machine shop and technical courses such as mathematics, physics, or blueprint reading.
- Ten years of combined experience:
- As a journeyman machinist or instrument maker, expert experience in programming and operating CNC mills, experience maintaining all machines and equipment in the shop, experience supervising shop operations and personnel.
- Requires familiarity with SolidWorks and MasterCam.
- Five (5) years of supervisory experience.
- Expert machinist with ten years of experience programming and operating CNC lathe and CNC milling machines.
- Experience in providing advice to students from senior design classes and students on competition teams such as FSAE, Aircraft Design, Rockets, Rover, and Ground Vehicles.
- Experience working with students and faculty to enhance designs to make manufacturing easier.
- Familiar with micrometers, sine bar and other precision measuring devices.
- Capable of maintaining mills and lathes.
- Capable of operating and maintaining various drill presses, saws, grinder, sanders, sand blaster, shear and other related equipment.
- Familiarity with all manual lathes, mills, saws, grinders, welders, and general shop equipment and tools.
- Fluent with all measurement tools.
- Knowledge of drafting.
- Ability to teach estimating and mechanical design.
- Excellent shop math skills including trigonometry.
- Ability to schedule and prioritize jobs.
- Excellent communications skills and temperament to work with students and clients.
- Ability to hold very tight tolerances on machined parts.
- Capability to organize and manage projects from start to finish.
- Ability to order raw materials and tools for various jobs in metal, plastics, and wood.
- Competency in quoting jobs.
- Ability to conduct tours and teach students some machine operations.
- Capability to teach new employees in shop practices and operation of machines.
- Ability to instruct students from organized classes the elements of proper design for machine operations.
- Ability to function with continuous interruptions.
- May be exposed to various hazards including chemicals, chemical fumes, electrical and mechanical hazards and biohazards.
- May work around standard office conditions.
- Climbing of stairs and ladders.
- Must be on your feet six hours a day average, be able to lift 50 lbs. safely.
