Illinois Wesleyan University, Assistant or Associate Prof Environmental Studies

Illinois Wesleyan University (IWU) invites applications for a six-year renewable teaching track position in Environmental Studies, to begin August 1, 2025. IWU seeks to hire a candidate to teach Environmental Studies from a social science perspective, with expertise in a field such as environmental policy, international studies, urban studies/policy, sustainability, or any related field. Candidates with experience in GIS will be given additional consideration, but this is not a requirement for a successful application.

The successful applicant will also have duties advising students, supporting student internships, and fostering community engagement that can reduce course load. More information about the Environmental Studies program at IWU and our students can be found here: https://www.iwu.edu/environmental-studies/.

A selective, nationally ranked, undergraduate, liberal arts college in the Bloomington-Normal metro area, IWU currently serves approximately 1600 students. A successful applicant can expect to instruct 8 small classes of 15 to 35 students annually in a variety of topics that will support environmental studies and interdisciplinary affiliates across campus. Illinois Wesleyan University is committed to recruiting, supporting, and fostering a diverse, inclusive, and civil community of outstanding faculty, staff, and students. We seek candidates who have a demonstrated commitment to supporting and further building our community in these dimensions. Illinois Wesleyan University is an EEO Employer.

Teaching-track faculty, while not eligible for tenure, are eligible for promotion and sabbaticals upon a successful contract renewal at the end of their sixth year. Teaching-faculty with a terminal degree (PhD in most social science fields) typically come in as an assistant professor and can be promoted to associate and full. A faculty member without a terminal degree can be hired as an instructor and promoted to senior instructor. This position is a full time, nine month, on-campus, benefits-eligible position. Benefits include a health care plan, a retirement plan, considerable time off, and access to tuition programs for employees and dependents.

Interested applicants should submit:

  • a single PDF file containing a cover letter addressing their qualifications for the position,  curriculum vitae,  a teaching philosophy,  a copy of all academic transcripts, and the names and  the contact information of three professional references.

Applicants  should also submit a separate document describing how their research, teaching, and/or service has provided preparation for contributing to IWU's commitment to address issues of race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and/or other matters of historical marginalization. All materials should be submitted to Amy Aldeman, aaldeman@iwu.edu, with the subject heading “Faculty position in Environmental Studies.” Review of applications will begin November 15, 2024. Questions regarding the position can be directed to W. Aaron Wilson (Director, Environmental Studies Program) at wshoults@iwu.edu.
