Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The Department of Epidemiology is one of the seven departments located in the Gillings School of Global Public Health. The department’s primary focus is to the development and application of research methods to understand the patterns and causes of health and disease, and the application of that knowledge to improving the health of populations. We provide strong training in research methods and opportunities for the application of epidemiology to a wide range of health problems through our research.

Position Summary:

The Department of Epidemiology is internationally recognized as a leader in epidemiologic research and training. The Department offers research training in most specialized areas including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, environmental and occupational health, health services/clinical epidemiology, reproductive health, and infectious diseases. For the fiscal year 2021/2022, the Department was awarded in excess of $96 million in sponsored funding (research, training, and public service). These funds involve 22 different primary sponsors, all of whom have different policies, procedures, and forms. In addition, grant funding is received from numerous private organizations, including other Universities. The Department’s current faculty consists of 62 faculty, 12 joint faculty, and 56 staff. The Department has 256 graduate students enrolled, including 74 in the MPH Applied EPI program, 165 in the PhD program and 17 in the MSCR program. The operation of the Department depends on various and complex sources of funds. These consist of state accounts, trust accounts, one receipt supported account, six training and 150 research grants and contracts. Sources of these funds include federal and state agencies and private organizations and total $50 million annually with 86% of that amount from extramural sources.


The Accounting Technician will oversee specialized departmental accounting, bookkeeping, and audit compliance for grant accounts in the Department of Epidemiology. Initially, the primary purpose of the position will be the administration and oversight of a 3-year NIH award that totals $22 million/annually. Oversight and administration will include coordination and collaboration of funding distributed between three schools (SPH, SOM, SOP) and one center, RENCI, within the University. In addition, the position will monitor and provide oversight of 22 subcontracts as well as being responsible for managing multiple pilot projects. The position will also provide oversight of other sponsored research, trust funds and financial and administrative costs related to the project. The position is responsible for ensuring compliance with GAPP, Uniform Guidance, Cost Accounting Standards, OMB circulars and University and State financial policies and procedures. The position requires specialized knowledge and skills to ensure that expenditures are properly charged according to each funders’ requirements, that accounting and budget reports are completed and filed correctly for each funder, and that the department is complying with University, Federal and other funders’ policies. In addition, the position will maintain records and information to assist the Accountant and Business Manager with long term planning for the Department, including projections on indirect cost and statistics on grant awards. The individual in this position must provide a strong leadership role for the accounting processes records and policy adherence.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience in accounting work; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

* Must be computer proficient.
* Clear communication skills, both written and verbal.
* Strong customer service skills.
* Demonstrated ability to multi-task.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

* Sponsored research experience is a plus.
* University experience preferred.
* PeopleSoft experience a plus.
* Prefer knowledge of UNC HR actions and payment processes within Connect Carolina, particularly fundswaps and PAATs.
* It is preferred that the incumbent possess advanced Excel skills which are necessary to create complicated spreadsheets, formulas, pivot tables and V-look-ups.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina.
